Wrestler Sakshi Malik enters world top-5

India’s bronze medal winner at the Rio Olympics, Sakshi Malik entered the top 5 of the 58 kg women’s wrestling world rankings at the fourth place . She is now the only Indian wrestler to be ranked in the top 10 of the United World Wrestling rankings, after becoming the country’s first female Olympic medallist in the sport.

  • Only two Indian male wrestlers made it into the world top 20. First round knock-out in Rio, Sandeep Tomar is ranked 15 in the 57 kg category. Stalwart Bajrang Punia who failed to make it to Rio is currently placed 18th in the 61 kg category.
  • Sandeep, who bowed out of the Olympics after losing his bout in the initial round, is currently placed at 15th position in the 57kg category, while Bajrang is ranked 18th in 61kg weight division.

About Sakshi Malik:

Sakshi Malik (born 3 September 1992) is an Indian freestyle wrestler. At the 2016 Summer Olympics, she won the bronze medal in the 58 kg category, becoming the first Indian female wrestler to win a medal at the Olympics and the fourth female Olympic medalist from the country.  She is a part of the JSW Sports Excellence Program, along with fellow female wrestlers Vinesh Phogat, Babita Kumari and Geeta Phogat.

Malik had previously won the silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, and the bronze medal at the 2015 Asian Wrestling Championships in Doha
