World’s Deepest Underground Physics Laboratory has launched in China

Introduction:

China has inaugurated the Deep Underground and Ultra-low Radiation Background Facility for Frontier Physics Experiments (DURF), which is the world’s deepest and largest underground physics laboratory.

The facility is situated beneath Jinping Mountain in Sichuan Province. After three years of major improvements, the laboratory is now operational, and its goal is to revolutionize the global search for dark matter, which is a hypothetical kind of stuff that does not interact with light or the electromagnetic field.

DURF’s Most Important Characteristics

A Depth of Extreme

DURF, which is located 2,400 meters deep, offers a distinct benefit in that it blocks the majority of cosmic rays that have the potential to interfere with observations, hence enabling experiments to be conducted with greater precision.

Research on Dark Matter Receives a Boost

Researchers think that the Dark Universe Research Facility (DURF) will make a substantial contribution to the advancement of dark matter research by providing unique testing circumstances that are not accessible anywhere else.

The Cosmic Ray Flux Is Extremely Low

Due to the position of the laboratory, it is subjected to an extremely low quantity of cosmic rays, which is around one hundred millionth of what is found on the surface of the Earth. This provides the laboratory with the optimum circumstances for conducting precise tests.

Benefits of Utilizing the DURF Facility

  • Very low cosmic ray flux, which guarantees that there will be very little interference during investigations.
  • Environmental radiation levels that are extremely low, thereby creating a research setting that is both clean and under control.
  • The radon concentration is extremely low, which helps to reduce the amount of background noise in tests.
  • Space that is extremely clean and provides researchers with specific circumstances for conducting advanced physics experiments.

Expansion and Interaction with Others

The DURF is the second phase of the China Jinping Underground Laboratory, which was constructed by Tsinghua University and Yalong River Hydropower Development Company, Ltd. in collaboration with those two organizations.

There have been significant enhancements and expansions made to the facility, which has been operational since December 2020, in order to improve its capabilities.
