World AIDS Day is observed on December 01

Introduction:

The first World AIDS Day took place in 1988, providing a platform to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS and honor the lives affected by the epidemic. This year marks the 35th commemoration of this important day.

Over the past 35 years, there has been significant progress in addressing HIV and AIDS thanks to advancements in medical research, increased access to treatment and prevention, and a broader understanding of the virus.

Theme for AIDS day:

This year’s theme for World AIDS Day is World AIDS Day 35: Remember and Commit.” This annual event serves as a reminder of the global struggle to end HIV-related stigma, an opportunity to honor those we have lost, and a rallying cry to commit to working toward a day when HIV is no longer a public health threat.

If communities take the initiative, the world will be able to put an end to AIDS. The frontline of progress in the HIV response is comprised of organizations that represent communities that are either living with HIV, at risk for HIV, or affected by HIV.

Communities are responsible for connecting individuals with public health services that are centered on the individual, fostering trust, fostering innovation, monitoring the implementation of policies and services, and holding providers accountable.

On the other hand, communities are being prevented from exercising leadership. There are a number of factors that are preventing HIV prevention and treatment programs from making progress. These factors include a lack of funding, obstacles in policy and regulation, limitations on capacity, and crackdowns on civil society and on the human rights of marginalized people.

Through the elimination of these impediments, community-led organizations will be able to contribute an even greater impetus to the global HIV response, thereby accelerating the progression towards the eradication of AIDS.

This year’s World AIDS Day is more than just a celebration of the accomplishments of communities; it is also a call to action to empower and assist communities in their responsibilities as leaders.
