West Bengal Governor Keshari Nath Tripathi gets Additional Charge as Governor of Tripura

President Pranab Mukherjee appointed Keshari Nath Tripathi, the present Governor of West Bengal, to discharge the functions of the Governor of Tripura, in addition to his own duties, during the absence, on leave, of Tathagata Roy. BJP leader from West Bengal Tathagata Roy was sworn in as Tripura Governor on May 21 this year.

Keshari Nath Tripathi

  • Tripathi, a Veteran BJP leader, was the speaker of Uttar Pradesh legislative assembly and the president of Uttar Pradesh unit of Bharatiya Janata Party.
  • He took oath as Governor of West Bengal on 24 July 2014.

Tathagata Roy

  • Tathagata Roy is an Indian politician, engineer and author.
  • He was president of theWest Bengal state unit of Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) from 2002 till 2006.
  • “The Life and Times of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee” is the famous book penned by Roy.

Article 153

Article 153 provides that there shall be a Governor for each State. Since it may be desirable in certain circumstances to appoint a Governor for two or more States, it is proposed to add a provison to this article to remove any possible technical bar to such an appointment.

Tripura

  • It is the third smallest state in India.
  • The area of modern Tripura was ruled for several centuries by the Tripuri dynasty.
  • Tripura lies in a geographically disadvantageous location in India, as only one major highway, the National Highway 44, connects it with the rest of the country.
  • The Indian government reorganised the North East region to ensure effective control of the international borders. Three new states came into existence on 21 January 1972. They are Meghalaya, Manipur, and Tripura.
