Union Environment Ministry constitutes four-member team for conservation of Loktak Lake

The ministry of environment, forests and climate change is sending a four-member team to Loktak lake in Manipur to suggest steps to be initiated for declaring Loktak Lake a Unesco World Heritage Site.The team will be on a three-day visit to the lake from Monday and hold discussions with the state government, agencies concerned and other stakeholders.

Loktak lake is the largest natural freshwater lake in the Northeast and plays an important role in the ecological and economic security of the region.

The terms of reference of the team that will visit Loktak Lake are:

  •  To review the implementation of works carried out with financial assistance provided by the Central and State governments so far for the conservation and management of Loktak Lake and suggest further interventions required for conserving the lake in a holistic manner.
  • Enumerate the steps required to be initiated for declaring Loktak Lake as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
  • Identify the steps and actions to be taken to increase the tourism potential of Loktak Lake.

The Ministry has asked the team to submit a report by November 15, 2016

MINISTRY OF ENVIRONMENT, FOREST AND CLIMATE CHANGE

  • The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has constituted a four-member team for conservation and management of Loktak Lake in Manipur.
  • The team will visit Loktak Lake from November 7 to November 9 and hold discussions with the State government, its concerned agencies and other stakeholders.  The consultations will also include people living in the vicinity of the lake.
  • One of the three All India Services, the Indian Forest Service (IFS) is under the administration and supervision of the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change.
  • Anil Madhav Dave as the Minister of State MoS independent charge of Environment, Forest and Climate Change in the Modi Government’s cabinet expansion on 5th July 2016.
  • He is a Member of Parliament, representing Madhya Pradesh in the Rajya Sabha (the upper house of Indian Parliament) since 2009.
