UD Ministry receives Puducherry as first Smart City nomination

Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Smart City initiative got its first nomination from Puducherry, a former French colony, which was awarded 75 out of a potential 100 points by the High Powered Steering Committee. The Government of Union Territory of Puducherry has nominated its capital city for inclusion in the 100 Smart Cities Mission launched on the 25th of June’ 2015.

  • Puducherry has increased internal revenue generation by 14% over the period 2012-13 to 2014-15.
  • The city has met 80% operation and maintenance cost of water supply through user charges and met 23% of capital expenditure from internal resources.
  • Puducherry has paid staff salaries till last month.

  • Pondicherry has been officially known by the alternative name Puducherry since 2006.
  • Formerly the chief French settlement in India, Pondicherry was transferred to India on November 1, 1954.
  • A Treaty of Cession ( together with karaikal, Mahe and Yanam ) was signed on May 28,1956. It became a Union Territory to be administered by the President of Indian Constitution.
