About Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev

Born on 8 February 1834, he lived as chemist and inventor who belonged to Russia. He is best known for formulating  the Periodic Law. he derived his own version of periodic table of elements to correct the properties of some already discovered elements and also to predict the properties of eight elements yet to be discovered.

About Dmiriti:

  • As he worked on  capillarity of liquids and the workings of the spectroscope, so his first book was on Spectroscope.
  • In 1865 he became Doctor of Science for his dissertation “On the Combinations of Water with Alcohol”.
  • He was honoured by scientific organizations all over Europe.
  • He was elected a Foreign Member of the Royal Society (ForMemRS) in 1892.
  • In 1893 he was appointed director of the Bureau of Weights and Measures, a post which he occupied till his death.
  • He found the first oil refinery in Russia.
  • In 1905, Mendeleev was elected a member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
  • The crater Mendeleev on the Moon, as well as element number 101, the radioactive mendelevium, are named after him.
  • He wrote textbook of his time: Principles of Chemistry (two volumes, 1868–1870).
  • Intrestingly, he claimed to have envision the complete arrangement of the elements in a dream.
  • He made presentation on periodic table and entitled The Dependence between the Properties of the Atomic Weights of the Elements, which described elements according to both atomic weight and valence.
  • He won Davy Medal, ForMemRS Medal in 1882 and 1892 respectively.

Death:

He died due to influenza at the age of 72 in 1907.
