Sikkim has been ranked the best among 26 Indian states in the sanitation survey conducted by National Sample Survey Office (NSSO), closely followed by Kerala, Mizoram, Himachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Haryana, Punjab, Uttarakhand, Manipur, and Meghalaya.
Sikkim scored an impressive 98.2 percent on a scale of 100. And while Kerala awed with a score of 96.4, Tamil Nadu disappointed with an outcome of 39.2 percent.
At the bottom stands Jharkhand with the poorest sanitation conditions. Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Gujarat is ranked 14.
- The results of the survey were released by Union Rural Development Minister Narendra Singh Tomar . Even though the survey was carried out last year in May-June, Mr. Tomar said that a “lot of changes have taken place since then.
Other states that ranked poorly on the survey include Chhattisgarh, Odisha, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, and Jammu and Kashmir.
- Haryana (87.33 per cent), Uttarakhand (86.42 per cent), Mizoram (84.75 per cent), Meghalaya (82.47 per cent), Manipur (81.04 per cent) and Punjab (78.89 per cent) are the other states which are among top 10 states.
- The study covered 73,176 households in 3,788 villages across India. Ranks were then awarded on the basis of percentage of households that had access to and usage of sanitary toilets .
