Sikkim launches open government data portal

Sikkim claimed to become the first state in India to have an open government data portal. Lok Sabha MP, P D Rai launched the open government data portal ‘Sikkim.data.gov.in’ and Open Government Data Platform (Sikkim). Sikkim thus became the first state in India to have this portal.

Speaking on the occasion Rai congratulated the Information Technology Department, Government of Sikkim and NIC team from Delhi for their effort. Rai also expressed hope to see more organic and agriculture data in the portal. On the open government data portal, the data produced or commissioned by the government or government controlled entities can be freely used, reused and redistributed by anyone.

  • Sikkim is located in Himalayan Mountains. Sikkim is the only state with Nepali Majority. Its economy is largely depends on agriculture and also tourism.
  • As per Census 2011, Sikkim has the lowest population among all the Indian states. In terms of land area, it is the second smallest Indian state.
