ISRO Launches ASTROSTAT Successfully

ISRO has launched ASTROSTAT, India’s first satellite for astronomical study, successfully from the Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Sriharikota High Altitude Range (SHAR) in Nellore.  Other than the ASTROSTAT, the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle-C30 (PSLV C-30) carries four satellites from the U.S. and one each from Indonesia and Canada. The total payload weight of PSLV-C30 would be 1,631 kg.

Abhinav Bindra shoots down gold in Asian Air Gun Championships

Beijing Olympics champion Abhinav Bindra clinched the gold in the men’s 10m Air Rifle event of the Asian Air Gun Championships, held in New Delhi. The 32-year-old Bindra shot 208.3 to bag the top prize ahead of Kazakhstan’s world number eight Yurkov Yuriy (206.6) and Korea’s Yu Jaechul (185.3) on the first day of competition.

Commodities regulatory body FMC finally amalgamates with SEBI

The Forward Markets Commission (FMC) has merged with capital markets watchdog Securities and Exchange Board of India (SEBI) with Finance Minister Arun Jaitley ringing the customary stock market bell to formalise the amalgamation. Sebi whole-time member Rajeev Kumar Agarwal would oversee the commodities market regulation in the merged entity under the overall guidance of the UK Sinha, Sebi Chairman.

V Shanmuganathan to hold additional charge of Manipur Governor

V Shanmuganathan, Meghalaya Governor, has been given an additional charge of Manipur after the demise of incumbent Syed Ahmed Khan. A communique issued by the President Pranab Mukherjee’s office said that Shanmuganathan “will discharge the functions of the Governor of Manipur, in addition to his own duties, until regular arrangements are made”.

Reliance, EDIC sign pact to manufacture defence equipment

Reliance Defence Ltd has signed a strategic pact with UAE’s Emirates Defence Industries Company (EDIC) to collaborate in the sector, especially in maintenance, repair and overhaul category. The two companies have agreed to jointly explore the opportunity for manufacturing and building capabilities in defence vehicles, aviation and associated areas, defence equipment and armament manufacturing..etc

Dr. Jacob Tsimerman wins 2015 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize

The 2015 SASTRA Ramanujan Prize will be awarded to Jacob Tsimerman of the University of Toronto, Canada. The prize will be awarded during the International Conference on Number Theory at SASTRA University in Tamil Nadu’s Kumbakonam (Ramanujan’s hometown) where the prize has been given annually.

India win 7 medals in Asian Rowing Championships

India bagged seven medals, including five silver and two bronze at the 16th Asian Rowing Championships that concluded in Beijing.

Russian Activist Lyudmila Alekseyeva wins Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize

The Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe (PACE) has awarded its annual Vaclav Havel Human Rights Prize to veteran Russian activist Lyudmila Alekseyeva. The 88 years old Alekseyeva is one of Russia’s most outspoken and respected rights advocates. PACE President Anne Brasseur,  who chaired the selection panel, said Alexeyeev had “inspired many generations of activists in Russia, but also abroad, to commit themselves to the struggle for justice.

Suresh Prabhu launches railway knowledge portal

Minister of Railways Suresh Prabhu has launched the Indian Railway Knowledge Portal, www.kportal.indianrailways.gov.in, which has aggregated most of the available knowledge about Indian Railways in one place. The portal was launched through video-conferencing established between Rail Bhavan and NAIR at Vadodara in Gujarat.


India Signs Loan Agreement with ADB for US $ 123.51 Million

The Government of India has signed a loan agreement with Asian Development Bank (ADB) for US $ 123.51 million for upgrading Tourism Infrastructure and Services in States of Punjab, Uttarakhand and Himachal Pradesh. The loan will be used for development and conservation of places of tourist attractions.

India signs deal with Boeing to purchase Apache and Chinook helicopters

India has signed a contract with Boeing to purchase 15 Chinook heavylift helicopters and 22 Apache attack helicopters. The deals will ensure that the U.S. remains among the top military suppliers for the Indian armed forces for some years to come. It will also help in further advancing the nascent efforts by the Indian private sector to create an aerospace industrial base in India.

NLC sets up first renewable energy project

Neyveli Lignite Corporation has set up its first 10 MW solar power plant at Neyveli. The 10 MW solar photo voltaic project at Neyveli, set up at a cost of Rs 74.60 crore,NLC sets up first renewable energy project. NLC Chairman and Managing Director B Surender Mohan formally inaugurated the project. The plant spread across 54 acres, has 48,000 solar photo voltaic modules, each with power generating capacity of 240 watt.

Former England Fast Bowler Frank Tyson Died

One of the fastest bowlers of all time, former England cricketer Frank Tyson died in Australia at the age of 85. Nicknamed Typhoon, Tyson emigrated to Australia in 1960.

Between 1954 and 1959, he played only 17 Tests for England, but captured 76 wickets at an average of 18.56. He played 244 first-class matches between 1952 and 1960, capturing 767 wickets. He retired at the age of 30.

India inks deal to launch 23 foreign satellites

Antrix Corporation is the commercial arm of Indian space agency Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO), has announced that India has signed up contracts to launch 23 foreign satellites soon. Out of 23 foreign satellites, two will go in two separate rockets. The remaining 21 satellites will piggy-back on bigger Indian satellite.
