World Tourism Day is observed on September 27 every year to raise awareness of the important impact tourism has on countries and communities around the world. Its purpose is to foster awareness among the international community of the importance of tourism and its social, cultural, political and economic value. It was at its third session (Torremolinos, Spain, September 1979), that the UNWTO General Assembly decided to institute World Tourism Day, commencing in the year 1980.
This year, the positive economic impact of tourism is being emphasized, reflected in the theme “one billion tourists, one billion opportunities.”
UN Secretary General Ban Ki Moon gives a call to action for the occasion, declaring, “let us work together to maximize the immense potential of tourism to drive inclusive economic growth, protect the environment and promote sustainable development and a life of dignity for all.”
