Dutee Chand: Indian sprinter wins on return from gender test ban
Indian sprinter Dutee Chand won gold (100 m) at the National Open Athletics Championships in Salt Lake. She finished in just 11.68 seconds. It should be noted that Chand was banned under athletics’ hyperandrogenism policy, which found she had naturally high levels of testosterone above a permissible level. She created history following a successful appeal against a ban imposed after a so-called gender test.

Syria crisis: ‘Deadly air raids’ against IS in Palmyra
Syrian government war planes have launched one of the heaviest bombardments yet on the city of Palmyra, which is held by Islamic State (IS) militants. About 25 air strikes left at least 26 people dead, including 12 militants. IS captured Palmyra, which includes a UNESCO World Heritage site, in May. Elsewhere, air strikes on Idlib killed 17 people.

Ajinkya Rahane gets CCI’s honorary membership
The Cricket Club of India (CCI) has conferred honorary life membership on India’s middle-order batsman Ajinkya Rahane in Mumbai. Rahane and his wife were given membership cards for utilising all facilities of the club by CCI president Kekoo Nicholson. Rahane said it had been his wish to become a member of the club since he had attended a coaching camp there as a budding cricketer. The CCI is also conferring an honorary life membership on India’s top woman tennis professional Sania Mirza after her recent win of the US women’s doubles title with “Swiss Miss” Martina Hingis.

‘Operation Smile’ rescues 19,000 missing children from slavery, abuse
Home Minister Rajnath Singh’s Operation Smile has rescued 19,000 missing children from being pushed into prostitution and bonded labor to ill-treatment by parents. The Central Government is planning to reward individual officers based on their performance but wants details of identified children to be published in media. The Operation has seen different state police and women and child departments step up efforts to rescue missing children, with Haryana and Maharashtra taking the lead.

Obama nominates Eric Fanning – the first openly gay US Army secretary
In a historical move, US President Barack Obama has nominated Eric Fanning as Army secretary and make him the first openly gay person to serve in that role. Fanning has been active in gay rights and served on the board of the Gay & Lesbian Victory Fund, a group that aims to increase “the number of openly LGBT officials at all levels of government.”

India and Laos sign key agreements
Vice President Hamid Ansari held delegation level talks with the Laotian leadership. India and Laos signed Air service agreement and another agreement on India’s grand assistance for quick impact projects were signed after the talks. The Vice President urged Laas Leadership to continue its active support to India for the reforms in UNSC. He identified three key areas – Mining, Plantation, and SMEs for investments by Indian companies. A business delegation from India will visit Laos by the end of 2015.

Veteran Marathi cricket commentator Bal Pandit passes away
Bal Pandit, the secretary of Maharashtra Cricket Association in the mid-1980s, passed away in Pune at the age of 86. A law graduate, Pandit was one among the pioneers in Marathi cricket commentary and was commissioned by All India Radio for many decades. He has authored a number of books in Marathi. Pandit endeared himself with fans of the game with his lucid live commentary of both international and domestic matches on All India Radio for over four decades.

Indian Railways develops Hybrid Vacuum Toilets
The Indian Railways has developed a prototype of hybrid vacuum toilets which uses only 500 ml of water for flushing. The design was developed by the development cell of the Railway Board that combines the advantages of vacuum toilets and those of bio-toilets to create a new design of hybrid vacuum toilet.

PM Modi launches IPDS in Varanasi to ensure 24×7 power supply to every house
Prime Minister Modi launched National Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS) in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh to provide 24×7 power supply to every house. PM laid foundation stone of two power substations.
The PM also laid the foundation stone of seven other developmental projects in Varanasi. He also formally inaugurated India’s biggest Trauma centre in Banaras Hindu University.
