500,000 children on the run from Boko Haram: UNICEF
UNICEF says attacks by armed extremist group Boko Haram have forced 500,000 children to flee their homes in the last five months. The U.N.’s children agency says 1.4 million children overall are “on the run” in Nigeria and neighboring countries where the group has sown terror in recent months. More than half of the 1.2 million children who have fled northern Nigeria alone are under 5 years old.
‘Metro Man’ E Sreedharan in UN high level advisory group
Metro Man’ E Sreedharan has been invited to the United Nations’ High Level Advisory Group on Sustainable Transport (HLAG-ST). He has been invited by the United Nations Secretary General Ban Ki-moon to serve on his HLAG-ST. The service is for a period of three years and Sreedharan has accepted the offer.
56 countries to participate in International Textile Fair VASTRA
More than 300 overseas buyers from 56 countries would participate in the international textile and apparel fair ‘VASTRA’ to be held from September 28-30 at Jaipur, Rajasthan. The USA, the UK, Japan, Australia, France, Portugal, Spain, Italy, Denmark, Bulgaria, Africa, the UAE, among others, would participate in the three-day exposition. Over 50 Indian buying houses are expected to participate from Delhi, Maharashtra, Jharkhand, West Bengal, Tamil Nadu, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan covering around 250 stalls.
Environment Ministry bans multidose vial of Diclofenac to save vultures
The Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change has requested the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare to restrict the pack of Diclofenac for human use in single dose only. Even after banning the use of Diclofenac for veterinary use, the multi-dose vials available in the market for human use were widely misused for veterinary purpose. This, in turn, has a severe impact on the population of vultures. Earlier, in 2006, the Government of India had imposed a ban on the use of Diclofenac for treating cattle.

Nehru Museum Director, Mahesh Quits
Mahesh Rangarajan has Quit as director of the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library (NMML) because the nature of his appointment which was approved by the previous UPA government on its last legs was questioned. On Sept. 15 2015, when Dr. Rangarajan informed the Council that he wanted to quit for personal reasons and he insisted once again on 16th September 2015. So, the Council accepted his resignation.
Facebook launches Signal: A news gathering tool for journalists
Social networking giant Facebook has released a new tool to help journalists find, organise and publish content found on its extensive network. The tool called Signal, helps journalists find, source, and embed content from Facebook and Instagram. The tool will be free for journalists.
Union Government presented Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskar and National Safety Awards 2013
The Union Minister of Labour and Employment Bandaru Dattatreya has presented the Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskar (VRP) and National Safety Awards (NSA) for the Performance Year 2013.
This year, 28 Vishwakarma Rashtriya Puraskar were shared by 132 individuals. These winners were selected out of a total of 193 applications received from different industries for the Performance Year 2013.
For the Performance year 2013, the total number of NSA Award Winners and Runners-up in the ten schemes adds up to 98 (53 winners and 42 runners-up). They were selected out of 199 applications received under various schemes.
London fifth-priciest city in the world but earnings lag behind: UBS
London is the fifth most expensive city in the world to live in but wage levels have failed to keep up compared to other major centers, a report by Swiss Bank UBS has found. The British capital ranked behind Zurich, Geneva, New York and Oslo when it came to the relative cost of goods, including rent, but was in 13th place on a comparison of gross salaries. The study found that whilst it was cheaper to live in Sydney, Copenhagen and Chicago, residents there earned more relative to Londoners.
Skeet shooter Mairaj Khan books Olympics quota
Veteran skeet shooter Mairaj Ahmad Khan celebrated the biggest day of his 12-year career when he clinched a Rio Olympics quota place for India at the ongoing ISSF Shotgun World Championship. This is India’s first quota place for the 2016 Olympics in the shotgun disciplines.
Khan had previously won gold in the men’s Team Skeet event at the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi.
West Bengal govt declassifies 64 files related to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose
The West Bengal government on Friday declassified 64 files related to Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose. The files were handed to the family members first and also kept on display in a police museum in Kolkata. However, the files will be allowed for public viewing only by Monday. The documents are believed to be in over 12,000 pages.
