Union Government bans NSCN-K for 5 years
The Modi government has banned Naga rebel group National Socialist Council (NSCN-K) of Nagaland (Khaplang) for five years. The government signed a peace accord with Naga insurgent group Nationalist Socialist Council of Nagaland (Isak-Muivah) – NSCN (IM) on 3rd August 2015. The NSCN-IM has been demanding declaring NSCN-K a banned group.
NHAI global arm to build roads in Iran, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan
The National Highway Authority of India is all set to launch its international body – NHAI International, to build roads and highways in Iran, Sri Lanka, Nepal and Bhutan. NHAI International will be a set-up outside the existing ambit of NHAI and will have its offices in several countries. It will work as a contractor mostly in neighbouring countries on the same model as railways PSUs — IRCON, Railtel and RITES — are undertaking construction and consultancy projects internationally.
Journalists from 4 countries to get Press Freedom Awards
Journalists who have endured death threats, physical attacks and imprisonment are being honored in New York with Press Freedom Awards. The Committee to Protect Journalists’ 2015 International Press Freedom Awards will be presented to Malaysia’s Zulkiflee Anwar Ulhaque, Paraguay’s Candido Figueredo Ruiz and bloggers and journalists from Ethiopia and Syria.
Afghan refugee teacher Aqeela Asifi awarded with 2015 Nansen Refugee Award by UNHCR
Afghan refugee teacher Aqeela Asifi, who has dedicated her life to bringing education to refugee girls in Pakistan, has won the 2015 UNHCR Nansen Refugee Award. Aqeela Asifi, 49, is being recognised for her brave and tireless dedication to education for Afghan refugee girls in the Kot Chandana refugee village in Mianwali, Pakistan – while herself overcoming the struggles of life in exile. Despite minimal resources and significant cultural challenges, Asifi has guided a thousand refugee girls through their primary education.
Shot putter Manpreet Kaur shatters national record
Manpreet Kaur, the Patiala-based shot putter, became the latest Indian athlete to qualify for next year’s Olympics. She shattered an 18-year-old national record en route to a sixth title at the 55th National Open Athletics Championship. She threw 17.96 metres in her second attempt to claim the gold medal, a hat-trick of titles at the National Open after she returned to field in 2013.
India ranks 81st in Global Innovation Index report
India has slipped to 81st position in the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2015 report, a decline by five positions as compared to last year. The GII, co-published by Cornell University, INSEAD and the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), surveyed 141 economies around the world. Switzerland topped the GII followed by the United Kingdom and Sweden securing number two and three positions respectively.
India and Cambodia ink 2 MoUs in different fields
India and Cambodia have signed two MoUs to boost bilateral cooperation in tourism, healthcare, agriculture and women empowerment (through information and communication technology) under the Quick Impact Projects Initiative. Indian Vice President M.Hamid Ansari, who is on official tour, has signed these important pacts with his Cambodian counterpart Prime Minister Hun Sen in Phnom Penh.
Cricketer Shivnarine Chanderpaul receives Icon Award
Veteran Test cricket left-hander Shivnarine Chanderpaul has been honoured with the Icon Award by the Indo-Caribbean Alliance. In a ceremony held in New York recently, the 41-year-old was given the New York City-based organisation’s highest award. Chanderpaul was one of four persons honoured in the ceremony. The others receiving awards were television personality Lakshmee Singh, New York City council member Eric Ulrich and businessman Dave Kadernauth.
Indian, Chinese firms ink 15 MoUs worth $590 million
As many as 15 MoUs with investment potential of $590 million have been signed between Chinese and Indian firms across various sectors. The inked deals, which are worth $590 million, cover crucial sectors such as infrastructure, energy, agriculture, information technology, electronics and pharmaceuticals.
Delhi will record world’s largest number of premature deaths due to air pollution
According to a report, After 10 years, Delhi will record the world’s largest number of premature deaths due to air pollution in the world. Kolkata will be the second such city. Third one will be Mumbai. Nearly 32,000 people in Delhi will die solely due to inhaling polluted air. Together, these three Indian cities topped the list of premature deaths due to harmful particles like PM2.5 and O3 in the air.
