Singapore ruling party PAP wins 2015 General Elections – Returns to Power

Singapore’s prime minister, Lee Hsien Loong return to power again in a massive victory for the 12th time since independence. It has won every elections since 1965. The PAP got 83 of the 89 seats in Parliament while the opposition Workers’ Party captured six. PAP has won 69.86 percent of the votes cast, according to the Elections Department, compared to 60 percent votes in the 2011 elections. The senior Lee became the country’s first prime minister in 1965 and remained in office until 1990, a period of rapid development and prosperity. His son has been prime minister since 2004.

Narsingh Pancham Yadav books an Olympic berth for 2016 Rio games

Narsingh Pancham Yadav on 13th September 2015 secured an Olympic quota place for India after bagging a bronze medal in the Men’s 74kg Freestyle category. With this win, Narsingh became the only Indian to win a medal at the prestigious tournament as well as book a berth for the 2016 Rio Games.

China builds museum in honour of 1st nuke, space scientists

China has built a museum to commemorate those who made the country’s first hydrogen bomb and satellites in the 1960s and early 1970s. Located on the Huairou campus of CAS University – some 60 kms from Beijing, the museum is housed at the site of the Academy’s former rocket test base founded in 1958.

Embee International to invest Rs 5000 crore in Egypt’s Agro Sector

Indian corporate Embee International is in the process of acquiring 33,000 acres of land for farming in Egypt where it will invest over Rs 5,000 crore to grow pulses and vegetables. The company, which is into textile business in Egypt for the last 28 years, said the land is being given to it by the Egyptian government on lease for 50 years which can be renewed thereafter.

Yuki Bhambri wins Shanghai Challenger

Indian Tennis Player Yuki Bhambri clinched his first challenger level singles title of the season by defeating Di Wu in the Shanghai ATP challenger Finals. Fourth seed Yuki came back from behind to overcame the home boy 3-6 6-0 7-6(3) in a gruelling two-hour contest. It was Yuki’s fourth Challenger level title.

Paytm plans to start India’s first payments bank

Paytm plans to launch India’s first payments bank by the end of this financial year and is counting on its mobile wallet experience to give it a clear advantage over established business houses that will be its main rivals. Paytm expects to touch Rs 10,000 crore in deposits in the next three years, building on existing consumer base and technological and costefficient set up.

FSSAI proposes new rules for nutraceuticals, ayurvedic products

The Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) has issued a draft notification for regulating norms such as mis-labelling of ‘health supplements’. The food safety regulator has come out with gazetted rules proposing to ban the sale of such products as ‘medicines’. It has also framed rules for products based on Ayurveda, Sidhha, Unani and other traditional health systems.

Classical dancer Kalamandalam Sathyabhama passes away

Mohiniyattam dancer, teacher and choreographer Kalamandalam Sathyabhama has passed away at the age of 77. Regarded as a matriarch of the classical dance, she was awarded the Padma Shri in 2014 and the first Swati Tirunal Puraskaram by Kollam Kathakali Club and Troupe in 2006. In 1994, she bagged the Leel Kendra Sangeeta Akademi award.

World number one Novak Djokovic beat Roger Federer in four dramatic sets to win his second US Open and 10th Grand Slam title.

Women’s Singles

Italy’s Flavia Pennetta defeated compatriot Roberta Vinci (Italy) in straight sets 7-6 and 6-2.

Men’s Doubles Title

French pair of Pierre-Hugues Herbert and Nicolas Mahut won the Men’s Doubles trophy of the US Open. They defeated Jamie Murray of United Kingdom and John Peers of Australia by 6–4, 6–4 score.

Women’s Doubles Title

India’s Sania Mirza and Switzerland’s Martina Hingis Women’s Doubles Title of the US Open.
In the final match, they defeated, Casey Dellacqua (Australia) and Yaroslava Shvedova (Kazakhstan) pair by 6–3, 6–3 score.

Miss Georgia Betty Cantrell is Crowned Miss America 2016

Miss Georgia Betty Cantrell was crowned 2016 Miss America on Sunday in a pageant that was overshadowed by a scandal from three decades ago. She was crowned by last year’s winner Kira Kazantsev. The new winner will inherit a lifestyle that could see her log 20,000 miles of travel per month.
