India, Canada, Singapore and Egypt eyeing French Mistral warships

Canada, India, Singapore and Egypt are showing interest in buying France’s two Mistral warships. Paris scrapped the deal to sell the vessels to Russia due to  the Ukraine crisis. A deal for two ships for the Russian Navy was announced by  French President Nicolas Sarkozy on 24 December 2010, and signed by Russian Deputy Prime Minister Igor Sechin and French Defence Minister Alain Juppé in the presence of Sarkozy on 25 January 2011.

CarDekho acquired Auto portal Zigwheels

Online auto portal CarDekho has acquired Zigwheels, an auto portal owned by Times Internet. This is the second big acquisition by Jaipur-based Girnar Soft, which runs the CarDekho, BikeDekho and PriceDekho sites, after it bought out Naspers-backed Gaadi.com a year ago.

Hollywood Actor John P Connell died

John P Connell, best known as the star of the daytime drama “Young Dr. Malone,” has died in Woodland Hills. He was 91. Born in Philadelphia, Connell received five battle stars and a Purple Heart during World War II. He was a radio operator and waist gunner aboard a B-24 crew which completed 43 bombing missions, reported Variety. He broke into show business on Broadway in “Time Limit” and “Uncle Willie” and with the national company of “Picnic.”

Ravi Shastri to continue as team director till T20 World Cup in 2016

Ravi Shastri has been retained as the Team Director of the Indian cricket team till the 2016 T20 World Cup at home, based on the recommendations of the BCCI advisory committee. Shastri, who was appointed Team Director in August 2014, has been given another seven-month extension till the completion of the World T20 in April.

India placed 22nd in new Asian football technical ranking

A new technical ranking system of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) has placed India in 22nd spot among the continent’s 46-member countries, the highest among South Asian nations. The new ranking system is based on the performance of the national team and clubs (at AFC competitions) of a particular country in the last four years.

World’s first human head transplant scheduled for 2017

An Italian-Chinese medical team has planned to perform the world’s first head transplant on a 30-year-old Russian computer scientist in China and the procedure may take place by December, 2017. Dr Sergio Canavero, an Italian neurosurgeon, plans to perform the procedure which is expected to last up to 36 hours.

Government approves $400-million plan to procure armed Heron TP drones from Israel

The government has approved the purchase of 10 missile-armed drones from Israel.  The acquisition is worth $400-million. These drones will be operated by the Indian Air Force. Israel’s armed Heron drones are similar to the Predator unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) that are capable of reconnaissance, combat and support roles.

National highways to grow by 50,000km in 6 months

The road transport and highways ministry will soon add nearly 50,000 km of roads to the National Highways (NH) network in the next six months. The new government has added about 7,000 km of roads to the NH length and at present it’s little more than one lakh km.
