Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) issued a press release informing about the National Wrestling Championship for men and women to be held in Gonda, Uttar Praedesh. On the top of the list, they mentioned Sakshi Malik’s name as one of the participants. However, it seems that the Olympic bronze medallist was not consulted for the event.
“I don’t know how my name has been mentioned in the participants list. I am not well and the news is wrong that I will play there. I will only go there to witness the nationals but I cannot compete,” she said.

The National Wrestling Championship for men and women will kick start in Uttar Pradesh from October 23. The 61st Senior Freestyle, Greco Roman Style and the 19th Female National Wrestling Championship is being organized at Nandni Nagar till October 25.
All affiliated Units of WFI, including the Railways Sports Promotion Board and the Services Sports Control Board are participating in this event. Sakshi is a Railways employee.
Around 650 wrestlers and 175 Officials from all over India are reaching Gonda for the competition. The other star players in the fray are Amit Dahiya (57 Kg), Mausam Khatri (97Kg), Amit Dhankar (70 Kg), Ravinder Singh (59Kg) all of whom would represent Haryana.
Bajrang (65Kg), Kadiyan (97Kg), Dharmender Dalal (130Kg) would also represent the Railways. The current Olympians Ravinder Khatri (80Kg) and Sandeep Tomar (57Kg) will represent Services.
