Newly-elected London mayor Sadiq Khan has been formally signed in to the role at a Southwark Cathedral ceremony. Former Labour leader Ed Miliband and Baroness Doreen Lawrence were present. Mr Khan received a standing ovation as he walked in to the hall. Having won 1,310,143 votes, Mr Khan received the largest personal mandate of any politician in UK history. The son of a London bus driver who grew up in the capital, he is the third person to become the mayor of London after fellow Labour politician Ken Livingstone and Conservative Boris Johnson.
Khan broke the eight-year hold of the Conservatives on City Hall and succeeds the charismatic Boris Johnson in a prestigious post that has responsibility for transport, housing, policing and promoting economic development. His success is a boost for Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, a veteran socialist who has been battling a row over anti-Semitism and growing criticism from the moderate wing of his party since his election in September.
Mr. Khan led an energetic campaign that was turned increasingly toxic by the personal attacks and slander levelled against him by his opponent, the billionaire Mr. Goldsmith, including the smear that he shared platforms with extremists in the past.
