IT secretary RS Sharma has been appointed the Chairman of TRAI or Telecom Regulatory Authority of India. The appointments committee of the Cabinet approved Sharma’s appointment for a period of three years or until further orders, whichever is the earliest. Sharma is an IAS officer from 1978 Jharkhand batch and replaces Rahul Khullar, who had retired in May.

- The Telecom Regulatory Authority of India (TRAI) is the independent regulator of the telecommunications business in India.
- TRAI was established on February 20, 1997 by an Act of Parliament to regulate telecom services and tariffs in India.
- TRAI’s mission is to create and nurture conditions for growth of telecommunications in India to enable the country to have a leading role in the emerging global information society.
- The TRAI Act was amended by an ordinance, effective from 24 January 2000, establishing a Telecommunications Dispute Settlement and Appellate Tribunal (TDSAT) to take over the adjudicatory and disputes functions from TRAI.
- The Headquarters of TRAI is in New Delhi.
