Reliance Industries has decided toreplace “.com” to “.JIO as a generic top-level domain (gTLD) and it will be used across the Reliance empire. It is being treated as the world’s largest fourth-generation mobile telephony launch with an investment of Rs 1-lakh crore.
Affinity Names Inc, a step-down subsidiary of Reliance Industries (RIL), has applied for multiple gTLDs, according to a recent policy change by ICANN (the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers), which allows legal brand owners to apply and obtain private gTLDs appropriate to their brand. ICANN is a non-profit that manages the internet domain naming system.
RIL, owner of the JIO brand name, will also have a direct control over the second-level domain names and will be able to use the ones that are most appropriate for the websites and the businesses they represent.
- Currently, RIL group owns over 1,100 domain names to protect its brand name in the web arena
- It also has a strong legal team, whose primary objective is to track IP infringements and ensure that proper course of action is taken to prevent it.
