Rakesh Sharma takes over as Canara Bank MD and CEO

State-run Canara Bank has announced that Rakesh Sharma has assumed charge as its Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer. Before joining Canara Bank, Sharma was MD and CEO of Lakshmi Vilas Bank since March 7, 2014. Sharma began his banking career with State Bank of India wherein he had raised to the level of Chief General Manager in his long distinguished career of over 33 years.  While posted at Tokyo, he was in charge of overall functioning of SBI’s branches in Japan. Sharma’s main expertise lies in retail and wholesale banking, corporate credit, asset liability management, loan syndication, trade finance, industrial relations and HR issues.

  • It was established atMangalore in 1906, making it one of the oldest banks in the country. The government nationalized the bank in 1969.

  • Canara Bank’s first acquisition took place in 1961 when it acquired Bank of Kerala.

  • Canara Bank sponsors two regional rural banks (RRB). They are Kerala Gramin Bank (Malappuram, Kerala) and Pragathi Krishna Gramin Bank (Bellary, Karnataka).
