The Rajasthan Government has allocated more than Rs 12 crore for Project Great Indian Bustard, a bird conservation program. A financial support of Rs 3 crore will be given by a Japan Bank. The Great Indian Bustard is also known locally as Godawan is also the state bird of Rajasthan.
Under the GIB Project, closures will be made at many places in Khudi rasla, Pokhran and Shahgarh of Jaislmer district for safe habitat of bird. In order to regularly monitor the bird information chips will installed.
The Project Great Indian Bustard was initiated by Rajasthan Government on World Environment Day 2013, at an initial cost of Rs 4.5 crore in 2013.
Great Indian Bustard
The great Indian bustard (Ardeotis nigriceps) or Indian bustard is a bustard found in India and the adjoining regions of Pakistan.
In 2011 Birdlife International uplisted this species from Endangered to Critically Endangered. The number was reduced to just 250 in 2008.
The Great Indian Bustard presently is confined to only 6 Indian states- Rajasthan, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
When the “national bird” of India was under consideration, the great Indian bustard was a proposed candidate.
