The Government of Rajasthan, led by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), made a significant move on September 4, 2024, by reserving 33% of jobs in the police force for women. This was part of the BJP’s 2023 election promise to increase the number of women in key government roles.

33% Reservation for Women

By amending the State Police Subordinate Service Rules of 1989, the government aims to recruit more women into the police force. This change is not only about offering jobs to women but also about ensuring that the police force can address issues related to women more effectively. A higher presence of women in law enforcement is expected to bring more sensitivity to handling women’s concerns and create better job opportunities for women in Rajasthan.

Women’s Representation in Law Enforcement

Traditionally, men have dominated law enforcement roles. The government’s decision is a step toward gender equality, ensuring more opportunities for women in male-dominated professions like policing.

The Cabinet also addressed a paper leak scandal from the 2021 sub-inspector recruitment exam. Although there were arrests, the government chose not to cancel the results, asserting that the selections were made based on merit.

The Congress party, currently in opposition, has called for changes to the Rajasthan Public Service Commission (RPSC), citing corruption concerns. However, the government defended the RPSC, noting that it plays a constitutional role and any changes would need careful consideration.

Other Key Approvals by the Cabinet

The Cabinet approved several other important measures:

• Pension Plan Extensions: Adding specially abled children and parents of government employees to the pension plans.
• Sports Quota: Extending job reservations for athletes who excel in sports.
• Land Approvals for Solar Projects: Approving land for large-scale solar power projects, which will support renewable energy initiatives and create jobs.

These decisions highlight the government’s focus on women’s empowerment, boosting renewable energy, and addressing public concerns about jobs and governance.
