Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s Central Asia Tour – A Detailed Description

PM Modi in Uzbekistan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi signed three agreements with Uzbekistan President Islam Karimov in Tashkent. Mr. Modi and Mr. Karimov discussed ways to enhance strategic, economic and energy ties apart from reviewing key regional issues including the situation in Afghanistan.

Both countries have agreed to strengthen cooperation in defence and cyber security.
The two leaders also discussed ways to implement the contract for supply of uranium from mineral-rich Uzbekistan signed in 2014. The pact was signed for supply of 2,000 metric tonnes of the yellow cake.
PM Modi invites Uzbekistan to join international North-South transport corridor and says India’s presence in SCO will strengthen the organisation.
Mr. Modi said President Karimov was also supportive of strengthening ongoing cooperation in the areas of agriculture, information technology and energy.
India lauded Uzbekistan’s support for India’s membership in SCO and permanent membership of UNSC.
Both countries have expressed their intention to strengthen coordination between the law enforcement agencies and special services.
The two countries noted the importance of promoting long-term, mutually beneficial partnerships among their business communities, companies and enterprises.
During the delegation-level talks, the two countries also agreed to explore various options to enhance surface connectivity between them.
The two sides recognised tourism as an important area of bilateral cooperation and agreed to implement practical measures.
India and Uzbekistan reaffirmed that the United Nations must play a central role in maintaining global peace and security, assisting common development and advancing international cooperation.

PM Modi in Kazakhstan

Prime Minister Narendra Modi met Kazakhstan President Nursultan Nazarbayev in Astana on the second day of his Central Asian Countries Tour.

Kazakhstan PM Karim Massimov seeks India’s assistance in helping the Kazakh central bank in financial inclusion.
Modi offered to help the Kazakh companies through an initiative like digital India.
Kazakhstan national railway company is investing India’s infrastructure sector starting with Mundra port in Gujarat.
India has called from Kazakhstan’s involvement in building the connectivity from India to Iran to Kazakhstan.
Modi has also called for cooperation between the two countries in areas of defence, joint training and military and technical cooperation.
India has also sought Kazakhstan’s help in getting oil fields.
The central Asian country has also expressed its interest in building solar plants of up to 3GW in India.
Kazakhstan the world’s largest producer of uranium will supply a total of 5,000 tonnes of the natural uranium to India during the 2015-19.

On July 10′ 2015, India was accepted as a full member of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation. Prime Minister Narendra Modi offered to work in combating terror and boosting trade by easing barriers. India had an observer status for the past 10 years and will technically become a member by next year. As of now, India has Observer status in the grouping, which comprises Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan.

PM Modi in Turkmenistan

India and Turkmenistan have signed seven important agreements for enhancing cooperation among the two nations. During comprehensive talks between Modi and Turkmenistan President Gurbanguly Berdymukhammedov, both sides decided to intensify efforts in dealing with threats of terrorism, organised crime and illegal drug-trafficking.

PM Modi in Tajikistan

India and Tajikistan have signed key agreements in the field of culture and human resource development after talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Tajik President Emomali Rahmon.

Programme of Cooperation (POC) between Ministries of Culture of India and Tajikistan in the field of Culture for the years 2016-18. The agreement envisages cooperation in the field of culture through exchange of expertise in protection, preservation and promotion of cultural heritage in both countries.
The other agreement deals with the exchange of Note Verbale (NV) on setting up of Computer Labs in 37 Schools in Tajikistan.

PM Modi in Kyrgystan

India and Kyrgyzstan have inked four pacts in areas such as defence and culture. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who arrived at Bishkek on July 11′ 2015, emphasized the need to combat terrorism and extremism which he described as a threat without borders. The two countries signed four key agreements including on cooperation in defence and culture fields.

Two MoU were also signed for cooperation between the Election Commissions of the two countries and on cooperation in the sphere of Standards, a move that will help economic relations.
PM Modi also unveiled the bust of Mahatma Gandhi in Kyrgyzstan.
The defence agreement signed is aimed at deepening bilateral cooperation in defence, security, military education and training.
It also envisages conduct of joint military exercises, exchange of experience and information, and exchange of military observers and instructors besides others.
