President presents 24th Saraswati Samman to Veerappa Moily

President Pranab Mukherjee has presented the prestigious Saraswati Samman for 2014 to Congress leader M.Veerappa Moily for his epic “Sri RamayanaMahanveshanam” written in Kannada. Veerappa Moily, the current Member of Parliament and former Chief Minister of Karnataka was congratulated by the President for his prolific writings along with having a successful political career.

Moily was conferred with Moortidevi Award in 2007.  It is an annual literary award in India presented by the Bharatiya Jnanpith organization for a work which emphasizes Indian philosophy and culture.

Saraswati Samman Awards
  • The Saraswati Samman was instituted in 1991 by the K. K. Birla Foundation. It consists of Rs 10 lakh, a citation and a plaque
  • It is an annual award for outstanding prose or poetry literary works in any 22 Indian language listed in Schedule VIII of the Constitution of India.
  • The inaugural award was given to Harivanshrai ‘Bachchan’ for his four volume autobiography.
