Leaders from all over the world met in Oslo to offer shoulder for a joint effort to promote education in countries which are affected by conflict, crisis and poverty.
Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg and Minister of Foreign Affairs Børge Brende opened the Oslo Summit on Education for Development, together with UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Nobel Peace Prize laureate Malala Yousafzai. Crown Prince Haakon also attended the opening of the Summit.
On a day before the beginning of the Summit, 14 Nobel laureates from across the world, led by India’s Kailash Satyarthi, has appealed to the United Nations and the international community at large to “loosen the purse strings” and invest in education to protect children from exploitation and violence.
What is Oslo summit?
The Summit has been initiated to help reverse the negative trend in international support for education and to contribute to enhanced domestic resource mobilisation. in various countries which are affected by education crisis. The Oslo Summit will build on the outcomes of the World Education Forum in Korea in May 2015, and provide input to the third International Conference on Financing for Development in Ethiopia in July 2015.
Objective:
The Oslo Summit wants to mobilize a strong and renewed political commitment to reach the 58 million children who are still being denied their right to education, and to strengthen learning outcomes for children and young people of all ages.
