October 9 – World Postal Day

World Post Day is celebrated each year on 9 October, the anniversary of the establishment of the Universal Postal Union in 1874 in the Swiss Capital, Bern. It was declared World Post Day by the UPU Congress held in Tokyo, Japan in 1969. Since then, countries across the world participate annually in the celebrations.

  • World Egg Day is also observed on October 9.

Protocol for establishment of the India-Ecuador Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) signed

The Protocol for the establishment of the India-Ecuador Joint Economic and Trade Committee (JETCO) was signed during the meeting between the Ambassador of Ecuador to India, H.E. Mr. Mentor Villagomez and Ms. Rita Teotia, Commerce Secretary. The JETCO aims further improving, deepening and strengthening the existing trade relationship between India and Ecuador. The JETCO will function as the primary forum for discussion and other promotional activities on trade and investment issues and will be meeting once in every two years. The first meeting of the JETCO is proposed to be held early next year in India.

The Railway Minister Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu launched following IT enabled passenger services through video conferencing from New Delhi.

1.Paperless Unreserved Ticketing through Mobile Phones on suburban stations over Central Railway

2. Paperless Platforms tickets at Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus, Dadar Central, Panvel, Thane and Lokmanya Tilak Terminus, Andheri, Mumbai Central, Borivali, Dadar Western, Dadar Central, Vasai Road, Bandra, New Delhi and Nizamudding stations on Northern Railway, Western Railway and Central Railway

3. Paperless Season tickets on suburban sections of Western Railway, Central Railway and New Delhi-Palwal Section of Northern Railway.

4.Currency, Coin – cum – Card operated Automatic Ticket Vending Machines at various suburban stations on Central Railway and Western Railway.

Tell us one place where Ganga is clean: NGT asks Centre

The National Green Tribunal today asked the government to “tell us one place” where the Ganga is clean and said that despite spending huge sums, the situation has gone from bad to worse. Expressing open displeasure over the government’s lackadaisical approach towards ensuring cleanliness and uninterrupted flow of the Ganga, it said “we take it that almost nothing has happened in reality.”

Vicco chairman Gajanan Pendharkar passes away

Gajanan Pendharkar, among the first to promote the idea of sponsoring television shows in India, through which he took ayurvedic cosmetics and Vicco to the global level, died in Mumbai. Chairman of Vicco Laboratories, the 81-year-old was engaged in the company’s day-to-day activities till three months before his death. Though the business originated in Mumbai, it had a strong Nagpur link. The company set up a unit in Nagpur in 1985.

Facebook unveils `dislike’ button, in form of 6 emojis

Facebook has finally unveiled a “dislike“ button -in the form of six new emoji, each representing their own feeling. They are in the form of emojis that represent “Love,“ “Haha,“ “Yay ,“ “Wow,“ “Sad“ and “Angry .“ The site will start rolling out the feature in Spain and Ireland, as a test. The countries have been chosen because they’re relatively closed groups.

The new buttons sit alongside the regular thumbs up as extra options. As with the Like button, the reactions will appear on any post in the news feed on mobile or desktop.

Tunisian National Dialogue Quartet wins Nobel Peace Prize for 2015

Tunisia’s National Dialogue Quartet won the Nobel Peace Prize for its contribution to building democracy after the Jasmine Revolution in 2011. Formed in the summer of 2013, it helped support the democratisation process in Tunisia when it was in danger of collapsing, said the committee.The quartet is comprised of the Tunisian General Labour Union; the Tunisian Confederation of Industry, Trade and Handicrafts; the Tunisian Human Rights League; and the Tunisian Order of Lawyers.

Operation Valsalya to track missing children

The Kerala government has launched a programme named Operation Valsalya to trace, rescue and reunite the missed children with their family. The state government’s ambitious programme is envisaged to be implemented on the lines of the much acclaimed ‘Operation Smile’ project in Ghaziabad. According to police statistics, as many as 69 children have been kidnapped or abducted across the state till June this year. While 116 children had been kidnapped in the state in 2014, the number was 136 in 2013 and 147 in 2012.

India’s first River Dolphin Reserve to come up in West Bengal

To protect the endangered Gangetic river dolphins, West Bengal will soon have the country’s first community reserve for the mammal. A decision to this effect was taken at a meeting of the State Wildlife Board. It would be set up in the Hooghly river and the methodology to develop the community reserve is being chalked out by a separate committee.

Indo-China Joint Military Exercise HAND-IN-HAND 2015

The Indo-China Combined Military Training Exercise HAND-IN-HAND 2015 will be conducted from 12 to 23 October 2015 at Kunming Military Academy, Yunnan, China. This will be the fifth exercise in the Hand-in-Hand series, which started in 2007. This exercise will strengthen and broaden interoperability & cooperation between both the Armies as well as complement a number of other exchanges between the two forces.

South Africa win T20 series 2-0 as 3rd match abandoned due to rain

The third and final T20 international between India and South Africa was tonight abandoned without a ball being bowled because of a wet outfield, allowing the visitors to clinch the three-match series by 2-0 margin. The abandonment of the game after just a passing evening shower again showed the poor drainage system of the iconic Eden Gardens.

Climate Change: Vulnerable Nations Launch V20 Group

Finance ministers from 20 of the countries most vulnerable to climate change launched the V20 group to pool resources for their fight against the impact of global warming. The group includes some of the poorest and least developed nations across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean, Latin America and the Pacific that are home to approximately 700 million people.

Jurgen Klopp takes over as Liverpool manager

Liverpool have confirmed the appointment of Jurgen Klopp as their new manager. The 48-year-old waved goodbye to Borussia Dortmund in May after leading the club to two Bundesliga titles in a seven-year spell at the club. Klopp replaces Brendan Rodgers after the Northern Irishman was sacked following the Merseyside derby draw.
