The 84th anniversary of the Indian Air Force (IAF) was celebrated with traditional pomp and gaiety at the National Defence Academy, Khadakwasla near Pune. The IAF is the world’s fourth largest air force with a primary responsibility to secure Indian airspace and to conduct aerial warfare during a conflict. It was officially established on 8 October 1932 as an auxiliary air force of the British Empire and the prefix Royal was added in 1945 in recognition of its services during World War II.

• After India became independent from the United Kingdom in 1947, the Royal Indian Air Force served the Dominion of India, with the prefix being dropped when India became a republic in 1950.
• Since independence, the IAF has been involved in four wars with neighbouring Pakistan and one with the People’s Republic of China.
• An oath-taking ceremony was organized for all the IAF personnel posted at NDA in the Air Force Training Team premises of the Academy. Air Marshal Kler administered the oath.
• The NDA is a unique tri-service military training establishment where in Army, Navy and Air Force cadets are trained. There are about 65 Air Force cadets in every course.
• These cadets are given flying training for 7.5 Hrs on Super Dimona powered aircraft over 10 sorties in his final term.
• Established on October 8, 1932, the Indian Air Force is celebrated its 84th anniversary by scintillating display by various aircrafts.
