October 5 – World Teachers’ Day
World Teachers’ Day is observed on October 5 every year since 1994. It commemorates teachers’ organizations worldwide. The main objective of this day is to mobilize support for teachers and to ensure that the needs of future generations will continue to be met by teachers. According to UNESCO, World Teachers’ Day represents a significant token of the awareness, understanding and appreciation displayed for the vital contribution that teachers make to education and development.
Shashank Manohar elected unopposed as BCCI President
Shashank Manohar of the Vidarbha Cricket Association takes over as BCCI president. He was declared elected unopposed at a special general meeting at the Cricket Centre in Mumbai. The election was necessitated by the sudden demise of Jagmohan Dalmiya, who had a short term of seven months after his election in March this year.
Indian-origin diplomat appointed UK’s ambassador to Qatar
Ajay Sharma, an Indian-origin diplomat, will be the new British Ambassador to Qatar. Sharma, currently the charge d’affaires to Iran, will take up his new assignment in November 2015. He will succeed Nicholas Hopton, who will be transferred to another post. Sharma has earlier served as the Foreign & Commonwealth Office (FCO) Head of Iran department and non-resident chargé d’affaires to Iran.
Renowned Telugu Cinema producer Edida Nageswara Rao passes away
Renowned Telugu producer Edida Nageswara Rao passed away at the age of 81. Born on April 24, 1934 in Kotha Peta, East Godavari, Rao was known for producing path breaking Telugu films such as ‘Sankarabharanam’, ‘Swati Mutyam’ and ‘Swayam Krushi’ under Poornodaya Movie Creations banner.
David Ferrer wins Malaysian Open in straight sets
Top-seeded David Ferrer became the first Spaniard to win the Malaysian Open when he defeated countryman Feliciano Lopez 7-5, 7-5 in the final match. Ferrer broke his opponent in the last game of both sets to clinch his 25th ATP tour title in just over 90 minutes. The 34-year-old Ferrer, playing his 50th tour final, improved his record against Lopez to 9-6.
Indian film ‘Zubaan’ opens 20th Busan film festival
Indian film ‘Zubaan’ opened the 20th edition of Busan Film Festival in South Korea. More than 5,000 filmmakers, entertainers and fans are attending the 10-day fastival. A total of 302 films from 75 countries including 94 world premiers and celebrations spanning 10-days with a rich line-up of films and celebrities from Asia and beyond the 20th edition of Busan International Film Festival kicked-off in Busan.
Portugal’s Luis Leao Pinto wins 2015 MTB Himalaya Title
Luis Leao Pinto of Portugal regained the ‘King of the Himalaya’ crown in the 11th Hero MTB Himalaya. Earlier he had won the crown in 2013. The top three riders in the Solo Men’s category – Luis Leao Pinto, Andi Seewald and Pau Zamora were stiff competition for each other as they competed neck-to-neck in the 600km long 7- stage race.
India and Lithuania agree to intensify agricultural cooperation
Minister of State for Agriculture, Mr Mohanbhai Kundariya, held bilateral talks in Vilnius with Lithuanian vice Minister for Agriculture Mr. Vilius Martusevičius. Both sides agreed that there was significant potential for intensifying bilateral cooperation in agriculture, particularly in sectors like food and dairy processing.
Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Balyan Launched KISAN Project and Hailstorm App
MoS for Agriculture & Farmers’ Welfare, Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Balyan today launched KISAN Project [C(K)rop Insurance using Space technology And geoiNformatics]. The project envisages use of Space Technology and geoinformatics (GIS, GPS and Smartphone) technology along with high resolution data from UAV/Drone based imaging. The project will pave the way for improvement in yield estimation and better planning of Crop Cutting Experiments (CCEs), needed for crop insurance programme.
Commerce Secretary Inaugurates Advantage Healthcare India – 2015
Commerce Secretary Ms. Rita A Teaotia has inaugurated the ‘Advantage Health Care India, 2015” , an international summit on Medical Value Travel in New Delhi to promote healthcare services exports from India. This has been organized by the Department of Commerce, Ministry of Commerce & Industry, Government of India, Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce & Industry (FICCI) and Services Export Promotion Council (SEPC).
Mahindra Intertrade appoints Sumit Issar as MD
Mahindra Intertrade Ltd (MIL), a wholly-owned subsidiary of Mahindra & Mahindra , has appointed Sumit Issar as its new Managing Director. Sumit Issar has also been appointed Managing Director of Mahindra Steel Service Centre Limited (MSSCL), a joint venture between Mahindra and Metal One Corporation, Japan. He takes over from Harsh Kumar.
Adani Ports inks MoU with L&T for Kattupalli Port Operations
Adani Ports (Adani) has entered into a non-binding Memorandum of Understanding with L&T Shipbuilding (L&T) for evaluating the operations of the port at Kattupalli, Tamil Nadu. The development comes amid reports that Gautam Adani-led Adani group is likely to take over the operational and management control of L&T Kattupalli International Container Terminal near Chennai to strengthen its presence on the east cost.
Veteran Venus Williams on an upswing after Wuhan win
Venus Williams, the American veteran took the crown at the Wuhan Open. It is her biggest win since 2010 and her 47th career title, when Garbine Muguruza retired in the second set. The 35-year-old star, who has long dominated women’s tennis with her younger sister Serena, looked on form at Wuhan and retirement seems to be far from her mind.
Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine-2015 announced
The Nobel Committee for Physiology or Medicine has announced the recipients of the 2015 award. The judges in Stockholm awarded the prize to William C Campbell, Satoshi Ōmura and Youyou Tu – the first ever Chinese medicine laureate.
Ashish Bahuguna given additional charge as CEO of FSSAI
Ashish Bahuguna, the Chairman of the food regulator FSSAI, has been given an additional charge of its CEO, following shifting of Yudhvir Singh Malik to the NITI Aayog. On September 23, Malik — an IAS officer of 1983 batch — was moved out and shifted as Additional Secretary in Niti Aayog. He was believed to be the man behind the ban of global giant Nestle’s popular noodle brand Maggi.
Israel barred Palestinians from entering Jerusalem’s Old City
Israel is barring some Palestinians from the Old City of Jerusalem after two attacks, one fatal, on Israelis. The restrictions are for two days and will stop Palestinians from entering the area unless they live there. It comes after a Palestinian stabbed two Israelis to death.
China won 2015 FIBA Asian Basketball Championship
China won the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Asia Championship by defeating the Philippines by 78-67 in the final. The victory has earned the nation a direct qualification for the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Philippines and Iran have secured the second and third place respectively in the tournament. India ended on eighth place in the tournament.
Flipkart appointed Sriram Venkataraman as Chief Financial Officer
India’s e-commerce giant, Flipkart, has appointed Sriram Venkataraman as the new Chief Finance Officer (CFO) for its commerce platform (CP). The company has also appointed Pramod Jain as Vice President and Head of Taxation. The IIT Graduate has more than 19 years of experience in Hindustan Unilever. His last role was Head of Sales Finance in Unilever.
Google Inc. officially becomes Alphabet
Google Inc. on has completed the move to reorganize as Alphabet, and its stock will begin trading as Alphabet on the Nasdaq under the same tickers “GOOG” and “GOOGL”. Each share of Google will be automatically converted to Alphabet stock.
