11. Hashim Amla becomes fastest to score 6000 ODI runs, breaks Virat Kohli’s record

Hashim Amla finally had reasons to smile in this series when he became the fastest batsman to go past 6000 runs in ODIs. He achieved this feat in just his 123rd innings, breaking the mark set by Virat Kohli, who had gotten past the mark in 136 innings. Before Amla, Kohli had achieved the landmark during the ODI series against Sri Lanka in November.

12. India, Sri Lanka begin naval exercise

India and Sri Lanka today began their bilateral naval exercise off Lanka’s Trincomalee focusing on anti-piracy exercises, gun firings, cross-deck helicopter operations and anti-surface operations. The Indian and Sri Lankan Navies would undertake the 4th edition of Sri Lanka-India Exercise (SLINEX) off Trincomalee, Sri Lanka from October 27 to November 1.

 Indian Naval ships Kora, Kirpan (both missile corvettes) and Savitri (offshore patrol vessel) along with ship-borne integral helicopters entered Trincomalee to participate in the exercise. In addition, an Indian Naval maritime reconnaissance aircraft will also participate in the exercise. The Lankan Navy will be represented by Sayura, Samudra, Sagara, six Fast Attack Crafts, two Fast Gun Boats and one Fast Missile Vessel.

13. FM Arun Jaitley launches PAN camps, eSahyog for paperless I-T assessment

Finance Minister Arun Jaitley today launched PAN camps and E-Sahyog in the national capital for settling Income Tax return claims digitally. These two initiatives of the I-T department is expected to expedite issuance of PAN cards and paperless tax assessment.

PAN CAMPRS

  • The PAN camps around different centres in India will facilitate PAN application and further facilitate filing returns and tax collection.
  • The PAN camps are aimed at expanding the coverage of number of people through Permanent Account Number (PAN). Currently there are 23 crore people with PAN card.
  • E-SahyogE-Sahyog is an online mechanism to resolve mismatches in I-T assessment without requiring taxpayers attending I-T Offices. The notices to assesses would be sent to their emails.
  • It is expected to reduce compliance cost especially for small taxpayers.

14. 3-day Naval Commanders Conference begins

Defence Minister Manohar Parikar indicated that One Rank One Pension could be notified once Assembly Election process in Bihar gets over. He was addressing a 3-day Naval Commanders Conference in New Delhi. The Defence minister also said that the ministry was taking steps to address shortfall of ship-borne helicopters, MCMVs and submarines in Indian Navy.

15. Nestle resumes manufacturing of Maggi

Swiss packaged food maker Nestlé SA’s Indian unit, Nestlé India Ltd, has started producing Maggi Noodles at three of its five plants at Nanjangud (Karnataka), Moga (Punjab) and Bicholim (Goa).  On 17 October, Nestlé India said that three laboratories certified by the National Accreditation Board for Test and Calibration Laboratories declared Maggi Noodles safe for consumption.

State governments of Gujarat and Karnataka have already lifted the ban on Maggi Noodles. Nestlé India’s Maggi Noodles had earlier cleared tests in various countries, including the US, the UK, Singapore and Australia.

16. Railways receives Rs 2000 cr from LIC

Indian Railways will receive Rs 2,000 crore from Life Insurance Corporation (LIC) as part of long-term funding tied-up with the state-run insurer to restart the investment cycle. The first tranche is part of the total Rs 1.5 lakh crore long-term funding LIC will provide under the institutional financing mechanism.

The idea is to borrow funds from institutional sources to ensure availability of funds for the next five years for completion of projects critical for railways for generation of revenue.

17. Amit Mishra released after interrogation in assault case

Team India cricketer Amit Mishra was arrested in Bengaluru by the city police in connection with a case filed by a woman for allegedly physically assaulting and abusing her in a Bengaluru hotel room in September. The leggie was later released on bail after interrogation.

The spin bowler is part of the Indian Test squad for first two Tests against visiting South Africa.

The woman in her complaint had claimed that she has known Mishra for the past three years and the alleged incident took place in a hotel room where the cricketer was staying when he came to the city along with the Indian team for a training camp in September.

18. SC appointed Upamanyu Hazarika Commission submitted report on illegal migrants from Bangladesh

A one-man Commission headed by Upamanyu Hazarika on 5 October 2015 submitted its report on illegal migrants from Bangladesh into Assam. The fact-finding commission was appointed by the Supreme Court in May 2015 while hearing the public interest litigation (PIL)-Assam Sanmilita Mahasangha Vs Union of India & Gov. of Assam.

The commission was appointed by the Supreme Court (SC) to find out and report on the ground situation along the India-Bangladesh border running through Assam.

19. France to introduce biometric visas to Indians

France will introduce biometric visas to Indian nationals from November 2, keeping in line with all the countries in the Schengen Area. All visa applicants will now be asked to come in person at any listed VFS centre of their choice to register their biometric data, it said, adding children under the age of 12 years are exempted from this procedure.

The recorded biometric data will be stored for a period of 59 months (almost 5 years), obviating the need for applicants to come in person again for renewing their visa. Furthermore, the biometric data recorded by France will be valid during this period for all Schengen Area countries.

20. Tata Trusts, Harvard University announce collaboration

Tata Trusts and Harvard University South Asia Institute (SAI) today announced collaboration on knowledge creation and capacity building for social and economic empowerment in India.

A key component of the project is the opportunity for budding social entrepreneurs and institutions in India to apply for social innovation grants totalling Rs 50 lakh that will spur interventions and scale up existing initiatives resulting in greater impact in select geographies.
