1. Four new crab species discovered in Kerala
Researchers at the Department of Aquatic Biology and Fisheries, University of Kerala, have reported the discovery of four new species of crab from the Kerala coast. The sea off Kovalam coast is home to a rare crustacean – a crab which belongs to a genus that has never before been sighted in the Indian Ocean. The Researchers have aptly named it Afropinnotheres Ratnakara, was found inside the brown mussel (Perna perna) at Kovalam. ‘Ratnakara’ means Indian Ocean in Sanskrit.

2. Indian Railway develops warning system for unmanned level
Indian Railways has developed a vandal-proof warning system for unmanned level crossings which is working satisfactorily for the last three months on Coimbatore-Metupallayam section. Research Designs and Standards Organisation (RDSO), railways research wing, which has finalised the specifications of the system. It has recommended to all zonal railways to initiate steps for installation of the warning system in their respective areas as a step towards prevention of accidents. Also it is advised to install at least one or two systems for field trials before large-scale development can be initiated.

3. Popular actor Pijush Ganguly passes away
Bengali film, television, and stage actor Pijush Ganguly, who met with an accident recently, passed away at a city hospital. Ganguly, 50, was survived by his wife and a son. He died because of multi-organ failure and fat embolism in a case polytrauma after he met with a road accident. His condition turned critical on Saturday and he had been put under ventilation with full life support as his parameters had been fluctuating massively. The noted character actor’s condition deteriorated so much that doctors had to cancel the second operation which was slated last afternoon.

4. Popular Actress Maureen O’Hara passes away
Maureen O’Hara, the ‘Quiet Man’ actress – who was born in Dublin in 1920 – passed away at her home in Boise, Idaho, at the age of 95. O’Hara, an iconic figure in Hollywood’s Golden Age of the 1940s and 1950s who was once considered one of the world’s most beautiful women, was also the star of “How Green Was My Valley” and “Miracle on 34th Street”.
Ireland’s President Michael Higgins spoke of his “great sadness” at the news in a statement. “She will be remembered as an outstanding and versatile actress, whose work especially in film, will endure for many years to come,” he said.

5. Punjabi Canadians won 18 seats in the recent election in Canada
In Canada’s newly elected Liberal government, under prime minister designate Justin Trudeau, Indian Canadians have notched up a record number of 19 seats. That’s more than double the seats they held in the previous government of eight. Of those 19, 18 are of Punjabi origin. While many of these seats have been won in Canada’s largest province of Ontario, a hub for the Indian immigrant community, five of the winners are women.
Of the 44 Indo-Canadian candidates, 20 are elected to that country’s Parliament. This is the maximum number of Indo-Canadians ever elected.

6. Sushma Swaraj inaugurates India-Africa Rose Garden
External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj has inaugurated the India Africa Friendship Rose garden ahead of the third India Africa Summit in New Delhi. Almost one fourth of the force has been deployed to secure the four-day summit that commences on Monday (October 26) and is to be attended by the heads of 54 African nations.
The summit will address the key challenges faced by Africa, which includes food, health and environmental security. India hopes to create conditions that stimulate trade and investment flows between India and African countries.
