7. Govt to hire security guards in buses as marshals

In order to ensure safety of women in public transport, the AAP government has decided to hire 200 private security guards and deploy them as marshals in Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) buses. DTC will float tenders in the next few days to choose a security agency and within one month, 200 private security guards will be deployed as marshals in the first phase. These security guards will be hired on a contractual basis and they will ensure safety of women inside the buses. Security guards will also undergo training programme so that they can prevent and deal with crime against women in the vehicles.

8. Telugu actor Mada Venkateswara Rao passes away

Veteran Telugu actor Mada Venkateswara Rao died here after a brief illness. He was 65. The actor, known for his comedy roles, passed away after undergoing treatment for a brief period at a private hospital here last night, family members said. Born in 1950, Mada shot to fame with his role as an eunuch in film “Chillara Kottu Chittemma”, directed by Dasari Narayana Rao in 1977.

9. Abhijeet Gupta wins Hoogeveen International

Indian Grandmaster Abhijeet Gupta won the Hoogeveen International Open Chess Tournament after defeating his compatriot Neelotpal Das in the ninth and final round, scored 7 points. In the final round, Gupta needed just 20 moves to defeat Das, who was hit by an avalanche of white pieces.

10. South Asian Games to held from Feb 6-16 in Guwahati, Shillong

The South Asian Games will be held in Guwahati and Shillong from February 6 to 16, 2016 with eight countries, including hosts India, participating in the regional multi-sporting event. There would be 25 disciplines, with 17 of them scheduled to be held in Guwahati and eight in Meghalaya’s capital city Shillong. The participating countries are Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Bhutan, Maldives, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka, besides hosts India.

11. President promulgated Ordinances on Constitution of Commercial Courts and Amendment to the Arbitration & Conciliation Act 1996

The President of India has promulgated two ordinances – one for constitution of commercial courts and another to amend the Arbitration and Conciliation Act 1996. One of the ordinances provides for the constitution of Commercial Courts, Commercial Division and Commercial Appellate Division in the High Courts for adjudicating commercial disputes of specified value and for matters connected there with or incidental thereto.

The other ordinance is for amending the Arbitration and Conciliation Act 1996. The union cabinet had approved promulgation of these ordinances and recommended the same to the President.
