  1. AIIMS, Ganga Ram doctors chosen for Dr B C Roy award

Two doctors each from the AIIMS and the Sir Ganga Ram Hospital (SGRH) have been selected for the prestigious Dr B C Roy Award for excellence in the field of medicine. Randeep Guleria, Head of Pulmonology, and C S Yadav of department of orthopaedics, from the All India Institute of Medical Sciences have been chosen for the award.

INDIAN AFFARIS

  1. Guwahati confirmed as venue for FIFA U-17 World Cup

Guwahati became the fifth Indian cityto be ratified as a venue for next year’s Under-17 football World Cup after a FIFA inspection team gave its thumbs up to the venue’s preparedness and facilities. The FIFA delegation along with members of the Local Organising Committee visited the site and had a comprehensive look at the stadium and the training facilities.

  1. India to host 1st Asian disaster risk reduction conference

Modi Government is hosting the first Asian Ministerial Conference for Disaster Risk Reduction (AMCDRR). It is the first major agreement of the post-2015 development agenda and identifies targets and priority action areas towards reducing disaster risk – ‘reducing the damage caused by natural hazards like earthquakes, floods, droughts and cyclones, through an ethic of prevention’.

  1. Govt to launch sea plane service between Nagpur, Shirdi

Road Transport and Highways and Shipping Minister Nitin Gadkari has said a sea plane service will be soon launched from Ambajhari lake to Shirdi via Anand Sagar Lake in Shegaon. The sea plane will fly in the morning and return the same day.The sea plane has been launched to benefit the people in and around Nagpur who visit these two pilgrimsites, Gadkari said at a function.

  1. PM Modi to lay foundation stone for Urja Ganga

Prime Minister Narendra Modi is all set to lay the foundation stone of the highly ambitious gas pipeline project ‘Urja Ganga’ in his Lok Sabha constituency, Varanasi. The gas pipeline project aims to provide piped cooking gas to residents of Varanasi within two years and, in another year after that, cater to millions of people in states like Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal and Odisha.

  1. Microsoft Launches Cybersecurity Engagement Centre in India

US tech giant Microsoft has set up acyber security engagement centre (CSEC) in the Delhi-NCR region that will help it work with partners in identifying and responding to cyber threats in the country. The India centre, which is the seventh such facility for the company globally, will function as a satellite to Microsoft’s Redmond Digital Crimes Unit (DCU).

  1. Sikkim Govt to organise 15-day trek to Kanchenjunga

Sikkim government is planning to launch eco-tourism at Mt Kanchenjunga. When launched, this initiative will let adventure lovers, mountaineers and trekkers circumambulate the mountain in a 15-day trek. The trek will start from the Kanchenjunga National Park (KNP) and will bring travellers in closest encounters with the snow-capped peaks, the local temples, the flora, the fauna and the unique biodiversity of the region surrounding this mountain.

United Nations Day 24 October

The 24th October, each year is the International United Nations Day. This followed a declaration by the United Nations General Assembly in 1947 which designated 24th of October, The anniversary of the Charter of the United Nations, as United Nations Day, by proclaiming that the day would be instrumental in making people aware and it shall be devoted in making known to the people of the world the aims and achievements of the United Nations and to gain their support for its work.

  1. Chinese researchers develop algorithms for smart energy grid

Researchers at China’s Northeastern University have proposed an algorithm to construct an energy grid that distributes power similar to data flow on the internet. The proposed ‘energy internet’ would use a main power grid combined with decentralised generators, including fuel, wind turbines and solar power, to distribute energy to multiple micro grids within each designated network.

  1. Lewis Hamilton wins 2016 United States Grand Prix

Lewis Hamilton kept the Formula One drivers’ championship claiming his first victory in five races by winning the US Grand Prix in Austin, Texas. It was Lewis Hamilton’s 50th Formula One victory. Mercedes team-mate and championship leader Nico Rosberg into second – cutting the gap between them to 26 points with three races remaining.

  1. Qatar’s former ruler Sheikh Khalifa bin Hamad al-Thani passes away

Qatar has announced three days of national mourning after the former Emir Khalifa bin Hamad Al-Thani, who was deposed in a palace coup, died aged 84.  During his time as leader from 1972 to 1995, he oversaw the transformation of modern-day Qatar into an energy-rich country — where the phenomenal wealth from gas an oil exports transformed the tiny Gulf state.

  1. Tom Hayden, famed anti-Vietnam war activist, dies aged 76

Famed American anti-war activist Tom Hayden has died aged 76. Hayden died in his home in Santa Monica “after a lengthy illness”. He was a member of the “Chicago seven” charged with conspiracy over anti-Vietnam war protests in 1968 and eventually acquitted. Born in Michigan in 1939, he became an activist during his time at the University of Michigan, where he helped to found Students for a Democratic Society (SDS).
