First ever double-decker Shatabdi on Goa-Mumbai route: Suresh Prabhu

The AC double-decker train will soon run between Mumbai and Goa. This train will be named Shatabdi and this is the first Shatabdi double-decker train in India.

Also responding to a demand made by Goa Chief Minister Laxmikant Parsekar for a Rajdhani train from Goa to New Delhi a special train would be started along the Konkan Railway route in Goa by the Indian Railways Catering and Tourism Corporation in order to cater to the state’s tourist traffic.

President gives Sangeet Natak Akademi awards

President Pranab Mukherjee awarded Doyen of Indian theatre M S Sathyu, eminent vocalists S R Jankiraman, Vijay Kumar Kichlu and Harmonium player Tulsidas Borkar with Sangeet Natak Akademi fellowship. Along with them, 35 other noted personalities from various disciplines of dance, drama and music were conferred Akademi awards for 2014 by the President at a glittering ceremony in the imposing Darbaar Hall of the Rashtrapati Bhavan.

Ratan Tata invests in virtual cash start-up Abra

Abra, a Silicon Valley bitcoin startup, on Thursday revealed it had raised money from Tata Sons chairman emeritus Ratan Tata and American Express, as part of its $12-million Series-A funding.

Tata has been investing in Indian, as well as international start-ups, for about a year. He has invested in companies such as Ola, Paytm, Snapdeal, Urban Ladder, Bluestone, and CarDekho.

Himachal Pradesh to host India’s first Paragliding World Cup

India’s first Paragliding World Cup has begun at Bir Billing near Baijnath town in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh. Snow leopard is the official mascot of this World Cup. It is for the first time that Paragliding World Cup is being organised in a South Asian country. Union Civil Aviation Minister Ashok Gajapathi Raju flagged off the event. The Paragliding World Cup will have different categories of competition including Paragliding, Hot air ballooning, Hand gliding and Acrobatic shows.

US to host US-India trade policy forum

US Trade Representative Michael Froman will host the ninth ministerial-level meeting of the US-India Trade Policy Forum (TPF) in Washington on Oct 29 to discuss how to expand trade and investment through forward-looking policy initiatives.

Western Digital to buy SanDisk for 19 billion US dollar

Western Digital Corporation has announced that it entered into a definitive agreement with SanDisk Corporation to buy it for 19 billion US dollar. Both the Multi National Corporations (MNCs) are based in the USA. The acquisition is expected to pave the way for utilization of complementary product lines of both the companies and will provide the foundation for a broader set of products and technologies from consumer to datacenter.

SanDisk was co-founded by Indian-origin entrepreneur Sanjay Mehrotra in 1988 and has market capitalization worth 13.3 billion US dollars as of June 2015.

Grant Agreement on gas interconnector between Poland & Lithuania signed

Poland and three Baltic states-Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia has signed the grant agreement on the GIPL (Gas Interconnector Poland – Lithuania) in Brussels, Belgium. The agreement facilitates construction of first gas pipeline between Poland and Lithuania and thus, ends the long lasting isolation of the Baltic Sea region. The agreement was signed at the EU headquarters in the presence of the top leaders of these countries.

Maldivian Vice-President arrested on suspicion of links to a blast on President’s boat

Vice President of Maldives Ahmed Adeeb has been arrested at the airport when he returned from an official visit to China. Police said that Adeeb was arrested on suspicion of links to a blast on the Presidential boat that occurred on 28 September 2015. The explosion took place aboard the boat when President Yameen Abdul Gayoom and his wife were returning to the capital from the airport after a Haj pilgrimage to Saudi Arabia. Gayooom escaped unhurt but his wife, an aide and a bodyguard were injured.

According to Maldives Constitution, if the president dies, is incapacitated or resigns, the vice president succeeds him.

MoD Approves Induction of Women as Fighter Pilots

The Ministry of Defence has approved the induction of women into the Fighter (Combat) stream of the IAF. This progressive step is in keeping with the aspirations of Indian women and is in line with contemporary trends in Armed Forces of developed nations. Since their induction into the transport and Helicopter streams of the IAF, their performance has been praiseworthy and on a par with their male counterparts. Inducting women into the fighter stream would provide them with an equal opportunity to prove their mettle in combat roles as well.

The first women pilots would be selected from the batch which is presently undergoing flying training at Air Force Academy. After successful completion of ab-initio training, they would be commissioned in the fighter stream in June 2016.
