1. Health Ministry identifies 2 initiatives for blood utilisation

On the recommendation of the National Blood Transfusion Council, the Ministry of Health & Family Welfare has identified two major initiatives towards better utilisation of blood and blood components. The first step is permitting the transfer of blood from one blood bank to another. This was not allowed earlier and will help in transfer of blood to places of scarcity. Detailed guidelines for proper and efficient transport of blood between banks have been prescribed.

2.Modi government makes Aadhaar number compulsory for budding entrepreneurs to register new business

The Modi government has made it compulsory for any budding entrepreneur to submit her or his Aadhaar number in order to register a new business. In fact, aspiring startups can’t even ‘fill’ a new online form for registering new enterprises introduced last month unless the Aadhaar credentials of their promoters (sought in the first column of the form) are validated online.

3.Bank of Baroda launches ‘Chillr Mobile App’

Bank of Baroda (BoB) has launched the Chillr Mobile app, in the process becoming the first public sector bank to partner with Chillr. The app, which is directly linked to customers’ bank accounts, will allow them to transfer money instantly to any of the contacts in their phonebook. Chillr is an offshoot of Kochi-based technology firm MobME. Two-and-a-half lakh users have successfully linked their bank accounts with the app and more than five lakh transactions have been made till now.

4.Justin Trudeau to become Canada’s next Prime Minister

Justin Trudeau, the young leader of Canada’s Liberals and the son of a popular former prime minister, has surged to a stunning election victory, bringing a dramatic end to Stephen Harper’s nine-year government. Now, he has the chance to restore the late Pierre Trudeau’s Liberal legacy, which has been under siege during 10 years of Conservative rule under Stephen Harper.

5. Veteran Kannada film-maker K.S.L. Swamy passes away

Renowned Kannada filmmaker Kikkeri Shamanna Lakshminarayana Swamy (KSL Swamy) passed away in Bengaluru, Karnataka. He was 77. He was popularly known Ravee and was also Kannada film producer, actor and playback singer.

6. Union Government appoints VK Malhotra as President of All India Council of Sports

Union Government has appointed veteran sports administrator Vijay Kumar Malhotra as President of newly established All India Council of Sports (AICS). With this he became first President of AICS and was given an equivalent rank of a Minister of State (MoS) in the Union Council of Ministers.

7. US, Spain ink new accord to cleanup nuclear accident site at Palomares

United States and Spain have reached an in principle agreement to clean up land at Palomares site (in Spain) contaminated by plutonium radiation from undetonated US nuclear bombs. The binding clean up deal was finalised in Madrid during US Secretary of State John Kerry official visit to Spain. Under the agreement, US will remove the soil contaminated by nuclear radiation at Palomares.

8.WHO released Global Status Report on Road Safety 2015

World Health Organization (WHO) on 19 October 2015 released the Global status report on road safety 2015. The report reflects information from 180 countries and indicates that worldwide the total number of road traffic deaths has gone up to 1.25 million per year.

9.Libya’s internationally recognised Parliament rejected UN-backed Peace Deal

Libya’s internationally-recognized parliament on 19 October 2015 refused to sign the United Nations (UN)-backed peace deal that proposed a power-sharing arrangement with rival Islamist-led authorities.

The internationally recognised parliament is based at far eastern town of Tobruk whereas Islamist-led government is based at Tripoli.
