UN body asks Sri Lanka to probe ‘rights abuses’
The United Nations Human Rights Council (UNHRC) in Geneva has adopted a consensus resolution on accountability for the alleged human rights violations during the Sri Lankan civil war. Sponsored by the U.S., the U.K. and other countries, including Sri Lanka, the resolution called upon Colombo to establish a credible judicial process, with the participation of Commonwealth and other foreign judges, defence lawyers and authorised prosecutors and investigators, to go into the alleged rights abuses.
GOI notified Mid-Day Meal Rules, 2015
The Government of India has notified Mid-Day Meal (MDM) Rules, 2015 under the Food Security Act, 2013. The new rules have been finalised by Union Government after consultation with the States and other related Ministries of Union Government.
PM Modi inaugurates MUDRA mega credit camp
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today launched the Mudra scheme in Dumka under which people can take loans up to Rs. 10 lakh to start businesses. “The Mudra scheme is one step forward to accelerate development in the country. Till now, 42 lakh people have taken benefits under the Mudra scheme and loans of Rs.26,000 crore have been given,” PM Modi said while launching the scheme in the state.
India commits 33-35% cut in carbon emission intensity by 2030
India has pledged to cut its carbon emission intensity by 33-35 per cent and increase the share of renewable energy by a massive 40 per cent in its total energy mix by 2030 in the target submitted to the United Nations Framework Convention (UNFCCC) on Climate Change for a global climate pact. In its Intended Nationally Determined Contribution (INDC) submitted to the UNFCCC, India announced that it aims at achieving around 40 per cent cumulative electric power installed capacity from non-fossil fuel-based energy resources by 2030.
BCCI launches toss coin to commemorate Gandhi’s birthday
Commemorating Mahatama Gandhi’s 146th birth anniversary, the BCCI will launch a specially-minted toss coin with the images of the Father of the Nation and Nelson Mandela for the India-South Africa cricket series. Designed exclusively for the Freedom Series, the 20 grams gold-plated sterling silver coin will be used by India and South Africa for all the formats of the game played with each other in India or South Africa for perpetuity.
US Treasury Department adds India to its FATCA list
The US Treasury Department has issued a list of 34 countries which includes India with whom it would share information under FATCA (foreign account tax compliance act) regulations. The pact aims to cover automatic sharing of information on bank accounts and other instruments like mutual funds, insuranceand equities with each other. This is aimed at fighting the black money or unaccounted money.
ADB to provide loan for India-Bangladesh Electricity link upgradation
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) will provide $120 million loan to upgrade the India-Bangladesh electricity network. Once completed, this will allow Bangladesh to meet its increasing power demand and support power exchanges across South Asia. The loan will be used to double the capacity of the existing inter-grid connectivity which links the power grid of western Bangladesh at Berhamara with the power grid of eastern India at Baharampur.
India students in Gandhi dress create Guinness Record
School children of Bangalore have created a Guinness Record for “the largest gathering of people dressed as Mahatma Gandhi”. A total of 4,605 children between the ages of six and 14 dressed in traditional white dhotis – long loin cloths – came dressed in spectacles, fake moustaches and skull caps and carried bamboo sticks. They assembled for four hours at Bangalore’s Kanteerva Stadium for Guinness adjudicators to count and verify the numbers. The record had been previously held by a school in the neighbouring state of Tamil Nadu.

Actress Eva Longoria was feted with Variety Latino’s first-ever Visionary award at the inaugural 10 Latinos to watch ceremony. The former 40-year-old “Desperate Housewives” star was given the honour in recognition of her outstanding contributions to Latinos through entertainment and philanthropy.
Andhra Pradesh set to allot 2,720 acres to DRDO for missile testing project
The Andhra Pradesh cabinet under the chairmanship of Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu, decided to allot 2,720 acres of land near Orvakallu in Kurnool district for DRDO’s missile testing project. The cabinet also decided to allot 1,965 acres of land to build a naval base at Rayavaram village in Visakhapatnam district.
Radar integration: IAF signs Rs 8000-crore deal with BEL
Indian Air Force (IAF) has signed a nearly Rs 8,000 crore deal with state-run Bharat Electronics Limited (BEL) for the extension of its programmes integrating all civil and defence radars across the country. The IAF has already established five nodes of the IACCS (Integrated Air Command and Control System) in the western sector, bordering Pakistan.
More than 500 children killed since start of Yemen conflict: UN
According to the latest report from the UN children’s agency, more than 500 children have been killed in war-torn Yemen since March. The UN estimates that more than 2,300 civilians have died since fighting escalated in the poor Arab nation. UNICEF warns some 1.7 million youths at risk of malnutrition as UN human rights body passes resolution on rights probe.
Gunman kills 9 in Oregon college classroom
The United States finds itself once again reeling from another mass shooting at an educational institution, after nine people were killed by a gunman at Oregon’s Umpqua Community College. Law enforcement sources confirmed reports identifying the suspect as Chris Harper-Mercer, 26, who lived with his mother in nearby Winchester, about 170 miles (273 km) south of Portland.
Titanic’s last lunch menu sells for $88,000 at auction
A menu for the last luncheon served to the first-class passengers aboard the ill-fated Titanic has sold for $88,000 at an online auction. The menu, which was saved by a first-class passenger, was sold on to a private collector, Auctioneers Lion Heart Autographs said. The price was in line with pre-sale estimates.
Stamped with a date of April 14, 1912 and the White Star Line logo, the menu included grilled mutton chops and custard pudding; corned beef; mashed, fried and baked jacket potatoes; a buffet of fish, ham and beef; an apple meringue pastry; and a selection of eight cheeses.
Amazon bars the sale of Apple and Google TV devices
Amazon is to stop selling video-streaming TV devices from Google and Apple because they don’t “interact well” with its own media service. The online retailer said it had made the decision to avoid “customer confusion” and the devices will be removed from sale by 29 October. Amazon has rapidly expanded its online content, using it to attract subscribers to its Prime loyalty membership scheme which offers fast delivery on purchases.
