1. October 17 – International Day for the Eradication of Poverty

The United Nations’ (UN) International Day for the Eradication of Poverty is observed on October 17 each year since 1993. It promotes people’s awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution worldwide, particularly in developing countries.

2015 Theme: Building a sustainable future: Coming together to end poverty and discrimination

In December 1995, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the First United Nations Decade for the Eradication of Poverty (1997–2006), following the Copenhagen Social Summit.

2. Maggi clears Bombay HC mandated lab tests: Nestle India

Nestle India has announced that all samples of Maggi have cleared tests conducted by three laboratories, as mandated by Bombay High Court. This has paved a way for the instant noodles brand to be back in the market after it was banned over the presence of excess lead. Nestle India said it would continue to cooperate with the Food Safety and Standards Authority, the apex food regulator and other compliance bodies. Nestle will now commence manufacture and will start selling only after the newly manufactured products are also cleared by the designated three laboratories.

3. China launches new communication satellite for HK firm

China on Saturday put into orbit a new communication satellite in a commercial mission by the Long March-3B carrier rocket from the southwestern Xichang Satellite Launch Centre.

Developed using China’s homegrown DFH-4 platform for the Hong Kong-based APT Satellite Company Limited, ‘APSTAR-9’ is designed to stay in service for at least 15 years.

It will replace its predecessor ‘APSTAR-9A’, which was launched in 1998 with a designed mission life of 15 years also. The launch is the 214th mission of the Long March carrier rocket series developed by China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASTC).

4. Former Navy Chief Admiral Tahiliani dies at 85

Former Chief of the Naval Staff Admiral Radhakrishna Hariram Tahiliani (retired) has passed away on in New Delhi at the age of 85. Born on 12 May 1930, Tahiliani was commissioned in the Navy on September 1, 1950 and served as the 11th Chief of Naval Staff from December 1,1984 to November 30, 1987.

A distinguished graduate of the French Test Pilot School and an outstanding pilot, he was the first to land on the deck of INS Vikrant on a Hawker Sea Hawk fighter jet on May 18, 1961, ushering carrier-based aviation into the Indian Navy.

5. Civil Aviation Minister inaugurates International Civil Helicopters Conclave 2015

Union Minister of Civil Aviation P. Ashok Gajapathi Raju has inaugurated the International Civil Helicopters Conclave 2015 in New Delhi.  Raju also inaugurated an exhibition on Safety Management System, Multi Mission Utility and Regional Air Connectivity. He launched the Corporate logo of Pawan Hans Limited and released a coffee table book on the occasion. The conclave marks the 30th anniversary of Pawan Hans Limited.

6. Flight of Nirbhay Missile Aborted after 700 Seconds of Launch

The test flight of India’s nuclear-capable ‘Nirbhay’ long-range subsonic tactical cruise missile, launched from the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur in Odisha, was aborted nearly 12 minutes after lift-off. The missile took off from a specially-designed launcher at launch complex-3 of ITR. All initial critical operations such as booster ignition, booster separation, wing deployment and engine start were successfully executed and Nirbhay reached the desired cruise altitude.

During 700 seconds of flight all the subsystems of Nirbhay cruise Missile functioned satisfactorily and met all the desired functions. The mission was aborted after 700 seconds of flight.

7. Aditya Birla Group enters ecommerce, launches online fashion portal abof.com

With online retailers stealing a march over traditional formats, conglomerate Aditya Birla Group entered the e-commerce space by launching fashionportal abof.com.  Aditya Birla Group Chairman Kumar Mangalam Birla said “the e-commerce sector is a sunrise sector from an investment point of view. While a lot has happened in the last couple of years, a lot more is yet to happen in this space”.

Abof.com (‘All about fashion’) is a one-stop fashion portal for apparel, footwear and accessories for men and women who are discerning customers but not heavy-discount oriented ones. The portal, that was launched after nine months of work, will not offer kids’ apparel. Aditya Birla Group is already present in the fashion space through Madura Fashion and Pantaloons.

8. Pakistan, Russia signed agreement to build 1100 km Gas Pipeline

Pakistan and Russia have signed a major agreement to build a 1,100-kilometre gas pipeline from Lahore to Karachi at an estimated cost of $2 billion. It is expected that this cooperation will take ties between the two Cold War-era adversaries “to a new level”. Russia will invest $2 billion in the project, the first phase of which is expected to conclude by December 2017 with the completion in 2018.

The 1,100-kilometre pipeline with a capacity of 12.4 billion cubic metre per annum will connect Karachi’s liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminals with those in Lahore. The project will be implemented in compliance with BOOT model (Build Own Operate Transfer).
