India’s former Ambassador to Nepal Bimal Prasad dead

India’s former Ambassador to Nepal Bimal Prasad, who was also a close associate of Jayaprakash Narayan, passed away today at the age of 92. He was earlier professor of South Asian Studies and Dean of School of International Studies, JNU after teaching at Patna University. Prasad had authored a number of books on JP’s philosophy and life including ‘Socialism, Sarvodaya and Democracy’, ‘Gandhi, Nehru and JP, Studies in Leadership’ and ‘A Revolutionary’s Quest’.

Jitu Rai won silver in 13th Asian Shooting Championship

Ace shooter Jitu Rai won India’s first senior medal at the 13th Asian Shooting Championship, finishing second behind Korea’s Park Daehun in the finals of the men’s 50m pistol. Park shot a finals world and Asian record score of 199.2 to clinch the gold medal. Jitu finished with a finals score of 189.5, in the process beating his long-time rivals Jin Jongoh of Korea and Vladimir Issachenko of Kazakhstan. Jitu qualified for the finals in 7th position with a score of 555.

Tanzania’s Magufuli sworn in as president

Tanzania’s new President John Magufuli was sworn into office today along with the east African nation’s first female vice-president to huge cheers from crowds. Magufuli’s win in the October 25 poll with over 58 percent of votes cemented the long-running Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party’s firm grip on power. Vice-President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who comes from Zanzibar, was also sworn in at a stadium in the economic capital Dar es Salaam.

President launches IMPRINT India project

President Pranab Mukherjee launched IMPRINT India – a single window funding clearance mechanism to get Indian technical institutions to conduct original research in areas where the country is heavily dependent on foreign technology.  Prime Minister Narendra Modi, HRD minister Smriti Irani along with senior ministers and prominent academicians were also present during the launch at Rashtrapati Bhawan.

‘IMPRINT’ is the one stop research funding mechanism to boost indigenous technology and research and a Pan-IIT and IISc joint initiative to develop a roadmap for research to solve major engineering and technology challenges.

Canada’s New Defence Minister Was Born in India

Harjit Sajjan, an Indo-Canadian Sikh, was named Canada’s new Defence Minister as Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s 30-member cabinet was sworn in at a ceremony in Ottawa. Mr Sajjan, a decorated Lt Colonel in the Canadian Armed Forces who was elected as a lawmaker for Vancouver South, is a combat veteran and has served in Bosnia and had three deployments to Kandahar, Afghanistan. Justin Trudeau was sworn in as Canada’s 23rd Prime Minister before a packed crowd, almost 50 years after his father took on the job.

Union Government constituted Empowered Committee to approve schemes under Nirbhaya Fund

The Union Government has constituted an Empowered Committee to approve schemes proposed under the Nirbhaya Fund. The Committee comprises officials from various ministries, including Women and Child Development, Home Affairs, Road Transport and Railways. The Secretary of the Women and Child Development Ministry will be the chairperson of the committee.

The Empowered Committee of Officers will take decision on the sanction of schemes/projects from Nirbhaya Fund within 15 days of the date of receipt of the proposal by the Ministry of Women & Child Development. The Nirbhaya Fund has a total of 3000 crore rupees fund as 1000 crore each was allocated to it in 2014-15 and 2015-16 on top of 1000 crore rupees initial corpus.
