1. SBI to float subsidiary to manage its properties

Country’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) is finalising plans to set up a subsidiary for managing its large portfolio of real estate properties and those taken on lease or rent. SBI is planning to set up a subsidiary for management of properties owned by it and also for those taken on lease or rent. The subsidiary would eventually take over these properties after it was formed.

2. Govt to announce Central KYC Records Registry entity soon

The Reserve Bank November 27 made an announcement by the government naming the entity, which will function as the Central KYC Records Registry (CKYCR). CKYCR would receive, store, safeguard and retrieve the KYC records in digital form of a client, for which necessary amendments to the related rules have been made. The KYC (Know Your Customers) records received and stored by the CKYCR could be retrieved online by any reporting entity across the financial sector.

3. NDB BRICS appoints 4 new VPs, allocates roles

NDB BRICS has been launched as an alternative to the World Bank and International Monetary Fund to meet funding needs of the BRICS grouping and other five BRICS countries has allocated formal responsibilities to four vice presidents. The Shanghai-based bank following the second meeting of its Board of Directors on November 23-24, the NDB is pleased to announce the allocation of formal responsibilities to the four Vice Presidents of the Bank.

4. China navy holds first joint anti-piracy drill with NATO

Chinese naval forces involved in anti-piracy drill in the Gulf of Aden have held their first joint drill with NATO ships carrying out the same mission, on November 27 as China seeks a greater global security role. The exercise will help improve communications between ships on anti-piracy duties so that China and NATO can together maintain maritime security and stability in the Gulf of Aden. It gave no other details. China, whose merchant ships and oil tankers are heavy users of the waters off Yemen and Somalia, has been an enthusiastic participant in the anti-piracy patrols.

5. Anti-submarine corvette handed over to the Navy

Kadmatt, the second of the four indigenously built stealth Anti-Submarine Warfare (ASW) corvette, was formally handed over to the Navy here on November 26 by city based shipyards Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers (GRSE). The Corvette which is named after an island in the Lakshwadeep archipelago, has advanced stealth features is likely to be commissioned with the Navy in January.

6. HSBC to Shut Down India Private Banking Business

HSBC Holdings Plc will shut its private banking business in India, marking the exit of another foreign bank from the cut-throat business in Asia’s third-largest economy. After a strategic review of the global private banking operations in India, we have decided to close the business. This marks further progress in the HSBC group strategy to simplify business and deliver sustainable growth.

Many foreign wealth managers had scrambled to open up shop in India a few years ago and aggressively ramped up operations to take advantage of robust economic growth, only to find themselves struggling. Even though the Indian economy has been minting millionaires at a strong pace, it has failed to translate into profits for the foreign wealth managers that have set up teams of well-paid bankers to help manage those riches.

7.  Noboru Karashima, Tamil scholar who inspired a generation passes away

Noboru Karashima, the distinguished scholar and historian of South Asia, died in Tokyo on November 26. His body of research has rewritten the economic and social history of medieval South India. He was 82. At the time of his death, Professor Karashima was Professor Emeritus at the University of Tokyo and Taisho University. He was the recipient of the Padma Shri in 2013 for his contributions in building India-Japan ties. As he could not travel to New Delhi to receive the award, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, in a gesture of recognition and respect, personally presented the award to him in Japan.

8. Anju Bobby George appointed Chairperson of TOP Scheme

Former world long jump champion Anju Bobby George was appointed as the Chairperson of Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) by Union Ministry of Sports and Youth Affairs. She will succeed Anurag Thakur, Member of Parliament and Secretary of Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) who had resigned from this post.

9. Marathi, Bengali films shortlisted for 2015 UNESCO Fellini Medal

Marathi film Katyar Kaljat Ghusali and Bengali film Cinemawala are among the twelve films shortlisted for prestigious 2015 UNESCO Fellini Medal. Katyar Kaljat Ghusali has been directed by actor-turn director Subodh Bhave, while Kaushik Gangualy has directed Cinemawala.The award will be bestowed upon film, which reflects the ideals promoted by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO). For the first time, the event is being organized in India at the ongoing 46th International Film Festival of India (IFFI), being held in Goa in association with the International Council for Film, Television and Audiovisual Communication, Paris.

10. TAPI gas pipeline project to start from December 13

The ground-breaking ceremony of the proposed multi-billion dollar 1,735-kilometre gas pipeline connecting Turkmenistan, Afghanistan, Pakistan and India will start from December 13. Reported by Turkmenistan Ambassador to Pakistan. The trans-national gas pipeline project known as TAPI, is intended to carry 33 billion cubic meters of gas annually through the Afghan cities of Herat and Kandahar and terminate in Fazilka, a border town in Indias Punjab state.
Turkmenistan Ambassador to Pakistan Atadjan Movlamov said the ground-breaking ceremony of TAPI project will take place in his country on December 13, Radio Pakistan reported. Turkmenistan is said to have the worlds fourth-largest gas reserves, but currently exports almost all of it to China.

11. HDFC Bank launches Rs 30-cr marketing campaign

Country’s second largest private sector lender HDFC Bank, which has launched ‘sonic branding’ or a musical logo, today said it will spend over Rs 30 crore to promote the new brand positioning which stresses on the digital banking. We have launched a distinct tune which represents the brand. This is a part of a national campaign that was launched before Diwali, its marketing head Kartik Jain told.

The `sonic branding is being included at all the touch-points, including ATMs and phone-banking application, where customers will hear the tune.The effort is part of a national marketing campaign stressing the digital banking, he said. The campaign involves a spend of over Rs 30 crore, a senior official said. Jain said the 360-degree campaign was first rolled out in non-metro cities before Diwali, and will soon be hitting the eight metros. Last fiscal, the bank had invested Rs 140 crore in advertising efforts.

12. Suzuki Motorcycle India ties up with Snapdeal to sell its vehicles online

Suzuki Motorcycle India has tied up with online marketplace Snapdeal for the sales of its vehicles, the two wheeler manufacturer said. Customers will be able to browse Suzuki products on the Snapdeal Motors platform, select a vehicle, book it (via online payment of booking amount) and select a dealership in their vicinity from where the vehicle can be picked up. As an initial launch offer, buyers who purchase Suzuki vehicles on Snapdeal can avail 1 year free vehicle insurance.

13. Air India to operate first non-stop direct flight from New Delhi-San Francisco

Air India airline is scheduled to commence a direct flight service to the Silicon Valley from the national capital from December 2. Air India has already announced that the new flight will be operated by the wide-body Boeing 777-200LR aircraft. Prime Minister Narendra Modi during his September visit to the Silicon Valley had made an announcement in this regard.

14. India successfully test-fires indigenously built  Agni-I missile

India has successfully test-fired indigenously built nuclear-capable Agni-I missile, capable of hitting a target at a distance of 700 kms, from a test range off the Odisha coast as part of Strategic Forces Command (SFC) training exercise. The surface-to-surface, single-stage missile, powered by solid propellants, was test-fired from a mobile launcher at 1002 hours from launch pad-4 of the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Abdul Kalam Island (Wheeler Island).

15. Korean duo Son and Ki shortlisted for Asian award

South Korean pair Son Heung-min and Ki Sung Yueng and Australian midfielder Massimo Luongo were shortlisted on November 25 for the Asian Football Confederation’s International Player of the Year award (Asian Award). Luongo was named Player of the Tournament as Australia beat South Korea to win the Asian Cup on home soil in January.
The fledgling award is one of 21 that will be handed out at the AFC annual ceremony in New Delhi on November 29.
The AFC Player of the Year award, for those who play their club football in the continent, will be contested by Guangzhou Evergrande captain Zheng Zhi and Emirati duo Omar Abdulrahman and Ahmed Khalil.

16. France and Russia agree to ‘coordinate’ strikes against IS

France and Russia have agreed to coordinate strikes against Islamic State (IS) jihadists after bilateral talks between French president Francois Hollande and Vladimir Putin in Moscow. Mr Hollande said Russia had agreed to target only Islamic State and similar jihadi groups. The West has accused Moscow of attacking mostly Western-backed rebel groups fighting Mr Assad. France will also increase its support to rebel groups battling Islamic State on the ground in Syria.

17. Eiffel Tower replica to come up in Kolkata

A 55-metre replica of the Eiffel Tower in being planned at the Eco Park in the smart city New Town. The replica of the tower would come up in the Eco Park and is expected to be a major tourist attraction. The project planned in the satellite city would take about three years to complete after its work order is issued and nearly 300 tonne of steel would be required to build it. West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is laying the foundation stone of the project today in presence of the Consul General of France in Kolkata. It would also be an expression of solidarity towards world peace and pay tribute to the 129 victims of the November 13 terror attack in Paris.

18. Dhoni becomes brand ambassador for Dubai-based company

India’s One-Day International cricket captain Mahendra Singh Dhoni has bagged his first endorsement deal outside the country, roped in to be the brand ambassador of Dubai-based hospitality and event management company Grand Midwest Group for three years. Established by UAE businessman Zafar Shah Khan, the Grand Midwest Group owns hotel properties in Dubai, United Kingdom and Ireland.

The company also has interests in the entertainment business in India and currently owns a local cricket team in the UAE. The group’s event management arm – GM Sports – was recently in the news for announcing the launch of a Twenty20 international cricket tournament called the Masters Champions League (MCL), which is scheduled to be played starting end of January next year.

19. China launches latest Yaogan Weixing satellite via Long March 4C

China launched another satellite in the military’s Yaogan Weixing series via the use of a Long March-4C (Chang Zheng-4C) rocket. The “YG-29″ mission began from the LC9 launch complex at the Taiyuan Satellite Launch Center (TSLC). Yaogan-29 was launched by a Long March-4C launch vehicle. It was reported as the 219th launch of the rocket family known as the Chang Zheng in Chinese.

This is the 219th mission for the Long March rocket family. China launched the first “Yaogan” series satellite, Yaogan—1, in 2006. The satellite will be used for experiments, land surveys, crop yield estimates and disaster relief, state—run Xinhua news agency reported. However, western analysts believe the series of satellites are of a military nature, using electronic intelligence, electro—optical and synthetic aperture radar sensing equipment.

20. Union Bank ties up with Maharashtra for OTC tax collection

State-run Union Bank of India has tied up with Maharashtra for over-the-counter (OTC) collection of taxes and receipts. The bank has integrated its core banking with the Maharashtra virtual treasury, GRAS (Government Receipt Accounting System), to facilitate OTC tax collection, which will provide one more mode of payment for convenience of tax payers and the state.

It will give tax payers the convenience of payment at the branch through their account or by cash with online generation of challans and real time updation of records through GRAS. The state will also be benefited by having a hassle-free revenue collection, daily reconciliation, real-time update of records and providing easy reach to the tax payers.

21. Amphibious aircraft could be 1st Indo-Japan defence JV

India and Japan are set to firm up an agreement Indo-Japan joint venture to jointly produce amphibious military aircraft during the upcoming visit of Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe. The US 2 amphibious aircraft, that has applications for search and rescue, surveillance as well as intelligence gathering, will be produced in India not only for domestic orders but will also be pitched jointly for exports in the region and beyond Besides the US 2 programme, the two sides are also expected to firm up a larger umbrella agreement to promote the joint development and production of military systems in support of the Make in India initiative.

22. NHAI approves pilot project for developing greenbelts along highways

The National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) has approved a pilot project for developing greenbelts along the national highways (NHs). The pilot project submitted by National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (NEERI), Nagpur for undertaking scientific studies on designing greenbelts along national highways. The project will be implemented on a 5 km stretch on NH-7 between Jam and Hinganghat in Nagpur region at an estimated cost of Rs 11.80 crore.
