AWARDS AND HONOURS
- 50,085 line dancers across China set Guinness record
More than 50,000 Chinese dancers set a new world record on for the largest number of people to simultaneously line dance across different locations. The mass line dance known as square dancing in China was performed by 50,085 across 14 Chinese cities including Nanjing, Shanghai and Chengdu. The main event was held in Beijing but the huge Guinness World Records attempt covered a total of 12 cities across the country. The previous record was set by 31,697 line dancers across six Chinese cities on May 21, 2016.

APPOINTMENTS
- Upma Chowdhary named first woman director of LBSNAA
Upma Chowdhary, a 1983 batch IAS officer of Himachal cadre, has been appointed Director of Lal Bahadur Shastri National Academy of Administration (LBSNAA) at Mussoorie, the first woman to be named for the post. The post has been upgraded to Secretary rank and Chowdhary would be the 23rd director and first woman director of the prestigious academy, imparting training to officers of civil services. She will replace Rajeev Kapoor.

- Union Cabinet approves introduction of Merchant Shipping Bill, 2016
The Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi has approved the Merchant Shipping Bill, 2016 for introducing it in the Parliament. The Merchant Shipping Bill, 2016 is a revamped version of the Merchant Shipping Act, 1958. The Bill provides for repealing of Merchant Shipping Act, 1958 as well as for the repealing of the Coasting Vessels Act, 1838.

- India ranks 138 in 2016 ICT Development Index.
India has been ranked 138th in the 2016 ICT Development Index out of a total of 175 countries. The International Telecommunication Union (ITU) recently published the 2016 version of the Measuring the Information Society (MIS) report. Africa was named as the worst performing region.

- Colombia Government, FARC rebels sign revised Peace Agreement
Colombian President Juan Manuel Santos signed a revised peace agreement with the country’s largest rebel movement, making a second attempt within months to end a half century of hostilities. Santos and Rodrigo Londono, leader of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia, signed the 310-page accord at Bogota’s historic Colon Theater — nearly two months after the original deal was surprisingly rejected in a referendum.

- Indian Navy’s seventh landing craft utility L-57 launched by GRSE
The seventh ship of LCU MK IV project is launched on 24 November 2016 at an impressive ceremony at Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers Ltd, Kolkata. The chief guest, Dr Subhash Ramarao Bhamre, Hon’ble Raksha Rajya Mantri along with Vice Admiral DM Deshpande AVSM, VSM, Controller of Warship Production and Acquisition (CWP&A), Chairman & Managing Director GRSE and various other dignitaries were present for the launch ceremony.

- 25 November: International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women
Each year on November 25, the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women is commemorated. A commemoration in essence is an opportunity to reflect on the challenges, prove that progress can be made and celebrate victories. It is also a reminder of the obligations and the responsibility we all must own at both the private and the public level to ensure that every woman, every girl, in all corners of the world lives in a world free of violence and fear.

- Six Indian male shuttlers in World Top 50 for the first time
For the first time, six Indian male shuttlers are ranked inside the top-50 men’s world rankings. In the latest Badminton World Federation rankings Kidambi Srikanth (12), Ajay Jayaram (19), HS Prannoy (25), Sai Praneeth (36), Sameer Verma (43) and Sourabh Varma (45), are all simultaneously ranked amongst the top 50 in the world.

OBITUARY
- Veteran journalist Dileep Padgaonkar passes away
Noted journalist Dileep Padgaonkar, who was a part of the three-member interlocutors group for Jammu and Kashmir in 2008, passed away in Pune after brief illness. 72-year-old Padgaonkar, a former editor of The Times of India, was unwell for past several weeks and died at a hospital in Pune. He also worked with UNESCO in Bangkok and Paris.

- Ivan Mikoyan, Russian aircraft designer passes away
Ivan Mikoyan, Russian aircraft designer and one of the minds behind the MiG-29 fighter jet, the staple of the Soviet and Russian Air Forces, has died at the age of 89. Mikoyan spent the majority of his career as a leading engineer at the ‘MiG’ Aircraft Corporation’s design bureau, which was founded by his uncle Artyom Mikoyan.
