November 21 – World Television Day
In December 1996 the United Nations General Assembly proclaimed 21 November as World Television Day commemorating the date on which the first World Television Forum was held in 1996. World Television Day is not so much a celebration of the tool, but rather the philosophy which it represents. Television represents a symbol for communication and globalization in the contemporary world.

Indian scientist Yusuf Hamied appointed to high-level panel on health
Yusuf Hamied, an eminent Indian scientist has been named by UN chief Ban Ki-moon to a high-level panel on health technology innovation. Hamied, the non-executive Chairman of generic pharmaceutical manufacturer Cipla will be part of the 16-member panel that will be co-chaired by former President of Switzerland Ruth Dreifuss and former President of Botswana Festus Mogae. The UN said Hamied has led efforts to treat and eradicate AIDS and other diseases in the developing world, and to give patients life-saving medicines regardless of their ability to pay. He offered the world’s first affordable AIDS medicine at the unprecedented cost of USD 1 per day in 2001.

Kotak subsidiary gets IRDAI nod to commence operations
Kotak Mahindra General Insurance Company (Kotak General Insurance) has received approval of the Insurance Regulatory and Development Authority (IRDA) to commence business as an insurance company. With this, the company has completed all registration formalities required by the regulator.
Kotak General Insurance has received permission to underwrite all classes of general insurance business (including health insurance). According to industry estimates, general insurance market in India is currently at Rs 84,000 crore premium per annum and has been growing at a healthy rate of 15 per cent for the last five years.

ADB pledges $120 million loan to finance India, Bangladesh electricity link
The Asian Development Bank (ADB) has pledged to provide 120 million dollar loan in order to finance cross-border electricity link between Bangladesh and India under SASEC Programme. In this regard, loan agreement was signed by ADB Country Director Kazuhiko Higuchi and Mohammad Mejbahuddin, Senior Secretary of Bangladesh Finance Ministry. The loan FUND would be used for Second Bangladesh-India Grid Inter connectivity project under the ambitious South Asia Sub-regional Economic Co-operation (SASEC) Programme.

Govt launches campaign to free Haryana of TB within five years
The Haryana state government on November 20 announced the launch of a campaign to free Haryana of tuberculosis (TB). The government will colloborate with Medanta-The Medicity for the ‘TB free Haryana’ campaign, which will be supported by the United States Agency for International Development (USAID). Bollywood actor Amitabh Bachchan will be the brand ambassador of the campaign. The funding for the project will come from USAID.

President inaugurates first ever World Indology Conference
President Pranab Mukherjee has inaugurated the first ever three-day World Indology Conference at Rashtrapati Bhavan in New Delhi. External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and President of ICCR Prof Lokesh Chandra also participated in the inaugural function. On this occasion, A ‘Distinguished Indologist’ Award was also presented to Prof Heinrich Freiherr Von Stietencron from Germany.

UNSC approves ‘all necessary measures’ to fight IS
World leaders have united against ISIS in a United Nations Security Council resolution calling on countries to take ‘all necessary measures’ to fight ISIS in Syria and Iraq. The Security Council unanimously agreed to the resolution, which states that the barbaric group ‘constitutes a global and unprecedented threat to international peace and security’.The resolution, which was drafted by France, condemns the ‘horrifying terrorist attacks’ in Paris a week ago which left 130 dead, as well as atrocities committed by ISIS in Tunisia, Turkey, Lebanon and the downing of a Russian passenger plane over Egypt.

Rajnath Singh’s China Visit – Points to Note
In a major boost to bilateral security cooperation, China and India have agreed to actively exchange intelligence on terror groups and their activities through a dedicated communication channel. A comprehensive joint statement issued after talks between Home Minister Rajnath Singh and top Chinese leaders. China and India also agreed to “coordinate positions on anti-terrorism endeavours at regional and multilateral levels and supporting each other” and promote “exchanges by groups of counter-terrorism experts to discuss counter-terrorism cooperation”.

21st century belongs to Asia: PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi is on a four-day visit to Malaysia and Singapore. On the first day of his tour, the PM addressed business summit of ASEAN countries in Kuala Lumpur. Addressing the Summit Modi said that India is a land of immense opportunities and invited investors from ASEAN countries to invest in India. PM Modi assured them ease of doing business in tune with the Make in India programme of the Government.
The PM further termed India and ASEAN countries as natural partners. The PM said that the 21st Century belongs to Asia, due to track record of ASEAN countries.

Chinese Navy conducts drills in South China Sea
The Chinese navy has conducted drills that simulate war in “certain waters” in the South China Sea. They also employed major destroyers and frigates, carrier-based helicopters and new submarines. The exercise was based out of the Sanya training base of the People’s Liberation Army Navy, focusing on anti-submarine warfare, according to a navy statement issued on November 20, without detailing the exact time and places for the maneuvers.

Russia inks deal to build Egypt’s first nuclear plant at Dabaa
Moscow and Cairo signed an agreement for Russia to build a nuclear power plant in Egypt, with Russia extending a loan to Egypt to cover the cost of construction. The plant, Egypt’s first, would be built at Dabaa in the north of the country and was expected to be completed by 2022. Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi gave few details but said the project would involve the building of a ‘third-generation’ plant with four reactors. It is not clear how much the deal is worth but Sisi said the loan from Russia would be paid off over 35 years.

600 terrorists killed in Russian attack
The Russian military has launched cruise missiles against Islamic State positions in Syria from both the Mediterranean and Caspian seas, one of which killed over 600 terrorists in the Deir Ex-Zor Province. The Russian defence minister said the air force was increasing the number of aircraft involved in pounding jihadis to 69.
The strikes ordered by Vladimir Putin hit seven targets in the Syrian provinces of Raqqa, Aleppo and Idlib. Moscow is also planning a three-day naval exercise in the Mediterranean and has reportedly warned Lebanon that its airspace will be affected by the manoeuvre.

Jos Buttler’s fastest ton steers England to series win
Jos Buttler hit England’s fastest one-day international century to lead them to an 84-run win over Pakistan in Sharjah and a 3-1 series victory. Buttler reached three figures in 46 balls, beating the 61-ball hundred he made against Sri Lanka in May 2014. The wicketkeeper hit 10 fours and eight sixes in his 116 not out from 52 balls as England posted 355-5. Pakistan briefly threatened a thrilling chase, but were bowled out for 271, with Moeen Ali taking 3-53.

Delhi’s Aditi Asian woman footballer of year in England
Delhi’s very own Aditi Chauhan, the 23-year-old goalkeeper bagged the Woman in Football Award at the third Asian Football Awards in London. Three months before she became the first Indian to feature in the FA Women’s Premier League in England when she signed for West Ham Ladies. An alumnus of Jesus and Mary College and Amity International School, Aditi last represented India in the Asian Games in Incheon last year. She is the first woman footballer from India to receive such a recognition.

India beat Japan, enter Jr Asia Cup hockey final
The Indian hockey team put up a scintillating performance to beat Japan 6-1 in the semi-final and enter the summit clash of the Junior Asia Cup. Mandeep Singh opened the scoring for India in the 12th minute before Manpreet Singh put the ball into the net in the next minute at the Wisma Belia Hockey Stadium.
