  1. Al Nahyan granted Mother Teresa International Award

Shaikh Abdullah Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, UAE Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, has been conferred the prestigious Mother Teresa International Award by the Mumbai-based NGO Harmony Foundation. Shaikh Abdullah is being honoured for his work in establishing institutions that protect youth from being radicalised and indoctrination from terrorist groups and persons looking to propagate violence against innocent people.

APPOINTMENTS

  1. Jagdish Singh Khehar appointed Executive Chairman of National Legal Services Authority

Government of India has appointed Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, as the new Executive Chairman of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA). He succeeds Justice Anil R. Dave, who retired from the Supreme Court. Chief Justice of India Justice TS Thakur is the patron-in-chief of NALSA. Hon’ble Shri Justice Jagdish Singh Khehar, Judge, Supreme Court of India, as Executive Chairman, National Legal Services Authority, with effect from 19th November, 2016.

  1. Catholic Syrian Bank to appoint C V R Rajendran as MD & CEO

The Reserve Bank of India has approved the appointment of C V R Rajendran as the Managing Director & CEO of Catholic Syrian Bank Ltd for a period of three years. Rajendran is currently holding the position of Chief Executive Officer of the Association of Mutual Funds in lndia. Prior to this he has held other key positions like Chairman and Managing Director of Andhra Bank and Executive Director at Bank of Maharashtra.

  1. Smriti Irani launches ‘PAHCHAN’ identity cards to Gujarat artisans

Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani today distributed PAHCHAN identity cards to artisans of five clusters of Gujarat, Jamnagar, Naroda, Surendranagar, Amreli and Kalol. The cards will give national identity to the artisans who will be covered under a national database. The artisans can avail of benefit of any government scheme through these cards.

  1. RBI proposes ‘Islamic window’ in banks for Sharia banking

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) has proposed opening of “Islamic window” in conventional banks for “gradual” introduction of Sharia-compliant or interest-free banking in the country. Both the Centre and RBI are exploring the possibility of introduction of Islamic banking for long to ensure financial inclusion of those sections of the society that remain excluded due to religious reasons.

  1. India, Cyprus ink new tax pact to replace 2 decade-old treaty

India and Cyprus have signed a new double tax avoidance pact under which capital gains tax will be levied on sale of shares on investments made after April 1, 2017, bringing the island nation at par with Mauritius in terms of tax treatment. The latest pact would replace the existing Double Tax Avoidance Agreement (DTAA), which was in place since June 13, 1994.

  1. Google launches Online Exhibition on Iconic Indian Women

Technology giant Google has through its cultural arm Google Arts & Culture, unveiled a virtual collection of artworks and exhibitions on the life of Indian women in history  spanning 2,500 years and from 26 cultural institutions across the country. Women in India: Unheard Stories,’ is a collection of over fifty virtual exhibitions with more than 1,800 artworks, photographs and videos, captures the stories of India’s unsung heroines ranging from goddesses to leaders, artists and doctors.

  1. World’s First Bollywood theme park opens in Dubai

The world’s first Bollywood Park has just been opened in Dubai. Visitors were greeted by ­performers dancing to thumping Bollywood music across the park with some atop a mock-up of a suburban Mumbai railway train and others outside the ­Rajmahal theatre, which will stage live musicals.

OBITUARY

  1. World’s first heart transplant doctor passes away

Renowned heart surgeon Denton Cooley, who performed the world`s first artificial heart transplant in the United States, has passed away at the age of 96 in Houston, Texas. Cooley, who was the founder of Texas Heart Institute, pioneered many techniques still used in cardiovascular surgery.
