November 19 – World Toilet Day observed

World Toilet Day (WTD) is a campaign to motivate and mobilize millions around the world on issues of sanitation. Originally established by the World Toilet Organization in 2001, this day to draw attention to global sanitation issues is marked each year on November 19. Since 2001, World Toilet Day has grown in scope and recognition by global partners. In 2013, the United Nations (UN) passed a resolution recognizing WTD as an official UN international day.

The theme for 2015 is Nutrition and Sanitation

Appointments

Vijay Keshav Gokhale appointed as India’s ambassador to China

Senior diplomat Vijay Keshav Gokhale, currently the country’s Ambassador to Germany, has been appointed as the Ambassador to China to replace Ashok Kantha, whose term will end in early January. A 1981 batch IFS officer, Mr. Gokhale is expected to take up the assignment shortly. He would replace Mr. Kantha, who was appointed as envoy to China in January 2014 for a two-year term.

President Appoints Justice T. S. Thakur as the new Chief Justice of India

In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (2) of article 124 of the Constitution of India, the President is pleased to appoint Justice Tirath Singh Thakur, Judge of the Supreme Court, to be the Chief Justice of India with effect from 3rd December, 2015. Thakur practised in Civil, Criminal, Constitutional, Taxation and Service matters in the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir. Justice Thakur was appointed as Acting Chief Justice of Delhi High Court on 9th April, 2008 and took over as Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana on August 11, 2008. He was elevated as Judge of Supreme Court and assumed charge on 17th November, 2009. He took over as Executive Chairman, National Legal Service Authority in October 2014.

2 Indian-Americans among richest entrepreneurs under 40

Two Indian-origin businessmen have been ranked by Forbes magazine among the richest entrepreneurs in America under the age of 40. Vivek Ramaswamy, 30, a former hedge fund manager, has been ranked 33rd on the list with a net worth of USD 500 million and his source of wealth is investments.
On the 40th spot is 29-year old Apoorva Mehta, the founder and CEO of Instacart, the web-based grocery delivery service. Her net worth is USD 400 million.

Indian-American Judge Ushir Pandit-Durant receives public service award

An Indian-American woman judge has become the first recipient of a US public service award in recognition of her contributions in the field of law. Queens Senior Assistant District Attorney and newly elected Civil Court Judge Ushir Pandit-Durant was honoured with the ‘South Asian Public Service Award’ by the Office of Immigrant Affairs under Queens District Attorney Richard Brown.

UN confers Kiren Rijiju with Disaster Risk Reduction Asia Champion honour

Union Minister of State for Home Affairs, Kiren Rijiju, has been designated as the Disaster Risk Reduction (DRR) Champion for the Asia Region by the United Nations Office for Disaster Risk Reduction (UNISDR). The honour was conferred by Ms. Margarete Wahlstrom, Special Representative of the United Nations Secretary General for Disaster Risk Reduction, during the inaugural session of the Asia Leaders’ Meeting towards Implementation of the Sendai Framework for DRR in Asia.

Resurgent Rajasthan Partnership summit 2015

The stage is all set for the two-day global investor meet ‘Resurgent Rajasthan’, which will see participation of top industrialists like Adani Group chief Gautam Adani, Reliance Group Chairman Anil Ambani and Mahindra Group Chairman Anand Mahindra. Aimed at attracting investments to the state, the summit will have exclusive sessions on sectors such as tourism, smart cities, highways and urban infrastructure on the first day and Micro Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs) the last day.

Govt extends IDEA scheme for five years

The government on November 18 extended its economic assistance programme IDEAS for five years. Under this the line of credit is provided to African as well as other developing nations and will have a financial implication of about Rs 3,771.77 crore. The decision was taken by the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs, chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.

Launch of Technology Acquisition and Development Fund under National Manufacturing Policy

Minister of State for Commerce & Industry (I/C), Mrs. Nirmala Sitharaman, launched the Technology Acquisition and Development Fund (TADF) under National Manufacturing Policy being implemented by Department of Industrial Policy & Promotion(DIPP) on November 18 to contribute to the national focus of Make in India. TADF is a new scheme to facilitate acquisition of Clean, Green & Energy Efficient Technologies, in form of Technology / Customised Products / Specialised Services / Patents / Industrial Design available in the market available in India or globally, by Micro, Small & Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).

Delhi government clears Jan Lokpal bill

The Delhi government has cleared the much-awaited Jan Lokpal Bill and it is likely to be tabled in the Assembly next week. The Bill brings the Chief Minister’s office under its purview and ensures that any investigation and trial by the Lokpal has to be completed within six months. Even as the Winter session of the Assembly opened at the Old Secretariat, Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal along with his Cabinet ministers cleared the Jan Lokpal Bill.

The Jan Lokpal Bill (Ombudsman Bill) is an anti-corruption Bill drawn up by activists seeking the appointment of an independent body that would investigate corruption cases, complete the investigation and trial in a time-bound manner. Once passed and notified, people will be able to complain directly and imprison corrupt politicians and bureaucrats under the law.

Government to set up separate portal to support innovations

Department of Electronics and IT (Deity) will establish a separate portal to provide support to innovators in various fields. In that portal people can put up their innovative products to get government help.

Comprehensive coastal security exercise concludes

A three-day comprehensive coastal security exercise ‘Theera Veta’ involving multiple security agencies conducted along the entire coast of Kerala, Lakshadweep, Minicoy islands and Mahe, concluded today. The exercise which began on November 17 concluded today. A similar exercise was earlier conducted this year from April 28 and 29.

As part of the exercise, infiltration and landing through coast was attempted and the efficacy of the patrols by various maritime agencies was tested.

Pay Commission recommends 23.55% hike; OROP for civilians too

In a big bonanza to central employees and pensioners, the seventh Pay Commission today recommended a 23.55 per cent increase in salary, allowances and pension along with a virtual one-rank-one-pension for civilians, involving an additional outgo of Rs 1.02 lakh crore a year.

A minimum pay of Rs 18,000 per month and a maximum of Rs 2.5 lakh per month has been recommended by the Commission, headed by Justice A K Mathur, that presented its 900-page report to Finance Minister Arun Jaitley. The recommendations, which are to be implemented from January 1, 2016, will benefit 47 lakh Central Government employees and 52 lakh pensioners.

RBI allows regional rural banks to launch internet banking with caveats

Reserve Bank of India has allowed strong regional rural banks to launch online transaction through internet banking, an essential product in new-age banking. Profitable RRBs with minimum Rs 100 crore net worth and better asset quality will be allowed to offer this service.

International Affairs

Bangladesh Government blocked social media platform on security grounds

The Bangladesh Government on 18 November 2015 blocked popular social media platform Facebook and online messaging and calling services WhatsApp and Viber on security grounds. Following this, Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) issued a letter to different telecom operators and all Internet Service Providers asking them to stop the services immediately.

China testing its largest new space rocket: Report

China is conducting tests on its largest and most powerful rocket, the Long March 5, in Hainan province for its space operations with plans to make the first launch before the end of next year. The Long March 5 is the most sophisticated rocket that Chinese designers have developed. The rocket is designed to conduct various missions. Long March 5, the nation’s next-generation heavy lift launch system, is nearly 57 metres high, with a diameter of 5 metres. It will be launched at the Wenchang Satellite Launch Centre.

Afghanistan to collaborate with India for Skill Development

An Afghanistan delegation led by their Deputy Foreign Minister Mr. Hekmat Khalil Karzai, on November 18 met the Union Minister for Skill Development and Entrepreneurship, Rajiv Pratap Rudy to explore possible collaborations between the countries to strengthen the skill ecosystem of Afghanistan.

WHO launched World Antibiotic Awareness Week with the theme Antibiotics: handle with care

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has launched the World Antibiotic Awareness Week with the theme Antibiotics: handle with care. The aim of the campaign is to raise awareness and encourage best practices among the public, policymakers, health and agriculture professionals to avoid the further emergence and spread of antibiotic resistance.

The campaign is part of the WHO’s recent efforts to fight against antibiotic resistance due to growing misuse. In May 2015, the Sixty-eighth World Health Assembly a global action plan to improve awareness and understanding of antimicrobial resistance through effective communication, education and training.

Obituary

Former international footballer P Vijay Kumar dies

Senior Tata Football Academy coach and former international footballer P Vijay Kumar died of cardiac arrest. Kumar had represented Bihar and Bengal in National Football Championships from 1979 to 1989. He represented undivided Bihar seven times and Bengal four times. He played for Mohammedan Sporting, Kolkata, between 1986 and 1990 and captained the side in 1989. After completing AFC ‘C’ and ‘B’ coaching courses in 1997 and 2004, he finished the ‘A’ course in 2009.
