120 Killed, France Declares Emergency

France has declared a national state of emergency and tightened borders after at least 120 people were killed in a night of gun and bomb attacks in Paris. Eighty people were reported killed after gunmen burst into the Bataclan concert hall and took dozens hostage. The siege ended when security forces stormed the building.

Four black-clad gunmen wearing suicide vests and wielding AK-47s stormed into the Bataclan venue in eastern Paris and fired calmly and methodically at hundreds of screaming concert-goers. A half-dozen separate incidents rocked Paris, including multiple bombs that detonated outside the Stade de France, where the country’s national soccer team was playing against Germany.

People were shot dead at bars and restaurants at five other sites in Paris. Eight attackers are reported to have been killed. Police believed all of the gunmen were dead but it was unclear if any accomplices were still on the run after the string of near-simultaneous attacks. Paris residents have been asked to stay indoors and about 1,500 military personnel are being deployed across the city.

EU launches $2 billion emergency fund for Africa to combat migration

The European Union has launched a fund for Africa with an initial $2 billion to combat the poverty and conflict driving migration to Europe. The trust fund, unveiled at a summit with African leaders in Malta, consists largely of 1.8 billion euros ($1.93 billion) put up by the European Commission. The new money will finance projects ranging from training and small-business grants and combating food shortages to schemes directly aimed at cutting emigration and tackling radicalization and other violence.

Among the biggest concerns in both Europe and Africa is the extent to which climate change, turning vast areas around the Sahara into desert, may set large sections of Africa’s fast-growing billion-plus population on the move, both within the continent and north across the Mediterranean.

Shipwright School, a premier technical establishment, has been commissioned as Indian Naval Ship Vishwakarma by Admiral RK Dhowan at Visakhapatnam. Smt Payal Soni, wife of Vice Admiral Satish Soni, unveiled the Commissioning Plaque and named the training establishment as ‘INS Vishwakarma’.

While addressing the gathering Admiral Dhowan emphasised that the commissioning of INS Vishwakarma would enhance the Navy’s in-house design and maintenance capabilities. This would go a long way in transforming the Indian Navy to a designer’s and builder’s Navy in keeping with the “Make in India” vision.

PM inaugurates Ambedkar memorial in London

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has inaugurated a memorial in London dedicated to Dr BR Ambedkar. India acquired the bungalow two months back where the Dalit icon and architect of India’s Constitution lived as a student in the 1920s. Modi visited the house where Ambedkar lived in 1921-22 during his student days at London School of Economics (LSE) and said the Dalit icon’s message of equality and justice continues to resonate.

Maharashtra had acquired the three-storey 2,050 sq ft house at 10 King Henry’s Road, in northwest London, in August for an estimated cost of 3.2 million to 4 million pounds which the state government had borne. Modi, who was accompanied by Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, paid floral tributes to Ambedkar’s bust at the house.
