  1. Sudanese Wins Prestigious Australian Award

A former child soldier has received one of Australia’s highest civic awards, the 2017 New South Wales Australian of the Year. Deng Adut has been recognized for helping to combat discrimination and assisting juvenile offenders. The 33-year-old former refugee is a successful criminal lawyer who helps Sudanese migrants. And he is now a contender for a prestigious national award.

  1. Roger Federer wins Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award

The 2016 ATP World Tour Awards were announced  and Juan Martin del Potro and Roger Federer were among those who were honored. Del Potro was named the Comeback Player of the Year and Federer received the Stefan Edberg Sportsmanship Award. Both awards were decided by a player vote.

  1. SAIL Wins Golden Peacock Award

The prestigious Golden Peacock Award for Corporate Governance for this year has been conferred upon the ‘Maharatna’ firm, Steel Authority of India Limited (SAIL). Set up by the Institute of Directors, India, the award was received by Ashwini Kumar, CEO of Rourkela Steel Plant (RSP) on behalf of SAIL during the 16th London Global Convention on Corporate Governance and Sustainability held in London recently.

APPOINTMENTS

  1. Batra First Indian to be International Hockey Federation chief

Hockey India president Narinder Batra was elected president of the international hockey federation (FIH)in Dubai on Saturday. He beat David Brinie of Ireland and Ken Read of Australia in a three-man race. Batra, who became the president of Hockey India in October 2014 after serving as secretary, had criss-crossed the globe to seek votes in the last few weeks.

  1. India to host Tobacco Control Conference for First time

India is set to host the crucial global tobacco control conference for the first time, where it will push for incorporating smokeless tobacco as an agenda. The Seventh Session of the Conference of Parties to World Health Organisation Framework Convention on Tobacco Control will begin at Greater Noida.

  1. No More Tension Mobile app launched

Union health minister J.P. Nadda launched “no more tension” mobile app to help- manage stress. The app, according to the health minister, will help users manage stress by providing appropriate information, symptoms and its management on stress.

  1. INSV Mhadei Flagged off for cape to Rio Race

Indian Navy Sailing Vessel Mhadei with an all-women crew was flagged off from Goa to Cape Town, South Africa by Rear Admiral Monty Khanna, Commandant Naval War College on 09 Nov 16 in a ceremony held at the Boat Pool of INS Mandovi, Goa. The vessel, is scheduled to reach Cape Town on 15 Dec 16. The Boat would then participate in the “Cape to Rio Race” (Cape Town to Rio de Janeiro) which will start from Cape Town on 26 Dec 16.

  1. Radio Kashmir Jammu starts Morning Gojri News Bulletin

The regional news Unit of Radio Kashmir Jammu on 10 November 2016 started morning news bulletin in Gojri language. The five minutes Gojri news bulletin will be aired at 10:15am daily from the transmitters of Radio Kashmir Jammu. Gojri is one of the most widely spoken languages of the state and over 20 percent chunk of the population in the state consists of Gojri speaking people.

  1. Centre to pay Rs. 500 cr a year to GST network as service charge

Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN), the company which was tasked to set up IT infrastructure for the GST, said that by January it will start training around 60,000 state government officials to equip them to handle GST roll out. The non-profit organisation said that the Centre agreed to pay around Rs 500 crore every year on behalf of the tax payers as service charge.

  1. India, Bhutan signs agreement on trade for better bilateral relations

India and Bhutan signed a new bilateral trade agreement to enhance trade between the two countries through trade facilitation by improving procedures. The bilateral agreement aims at cutting down on documentation and adding additional exit and entry points for Bhutan’s trade with other countries. The agreement was signed by Commerce and Industry Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and H.E. Tengye Lyonpo Lekey Dorji, Minister for Economic Affairs, Bhutan.

  1. Pune to host India-China ‘Hand-In-Hand 2016’ training

The India-China Joint Training Exercise “Hand in Hand 2016” will be held in Pune from November 15 to 27. The exercise is in continuation of the series of joint exercises between India and China. This will be the sixth joint training exercise between the Indian Army and the People’s Liberation Army of China and is held annually, alternately, in India and China.

  1. India to preside next edition of COP in Geneva in 2018

India will preside the eighth edition of the Conference of Parties (COP) to WHO Framework Convention on Tobacco Control (FCTC) which will be held in Switzerland’s Geneva in 2018. Health Secretary C K Mishra has been chosen as the President of the COP Bureau, for the next two years, after a unanimous decision by the COP7Plenary session.

  1. Singer, songwriter Leonard Cohen passed away at 82

Leonard Cohen, the baritone-voiced Canadian singer-songwriter who seamlessly blended spirituality in hits like “Hallelujah,” “Suzanne” and “Bird on a Wire,” has died at the age of 82.Cohen, also renowned as a poet, novelist and aspiring Zen monk, blended folk music with a darker, sexual edge that won him fans around the world and among fellow musicians like Bob Dylan and R.E.M.
