  1. Amitav Ghosh to get Lifetime Achievement Award 2016, in Tata Literature Live

Indian-American fiction author Amitav Ghosh has been named for this year’s Tata Literature Live! Lifetime Achievement Award, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the Indian literary space. The award will be presented to him at the upcoming four-day Tata Literature Live! annual awards ceremony scheduled for November 20 in Mumbai.

  1. Young Syrian named journalist of the year by press watchdog

Syrian freelance journalist Hadi Abdullah won one of the world’s top press awards for reporting from some of the most perilous zones in his country’s five-year-old war. Reporters without Borders (RSF) said it was awarding the 29-year-old Syrian the RSF-TV5 Mondeprize, the second year runningthat the honour has gone to a Syrian.

  1. Ishaat Hussain appointed as interim Chairman of TCS

Tata Consultancy Services has said that Tata Sons has appointed Ishaat Hussain as the chairman of the company. Tata Sons has also issued a special notice to convene an extraordinary general meeting.The company has received a letter datedNovember 9, 2016 from Tata Sons Limited nominating Mr Ishaat Hussain as the Chairman of the board of directors of the company in place of Cyrus P. Mistry with immediate effect.

4. Pramila Jayapal , Kamala Harris becomes first ever Indian-American to win U.S. Senator seat

  • California’s Attorney General Kamala Harris scripted history as she won the S. Senate seat from the state, becoming the first Indian-American to achieve the feat. In a historic day for Indian-Americans, Democratic candidate Raja Krishnamoorthi won the election to the US House of Representatives from Illinois.
  • Pramila Jayapal became the first Indian-American woman to be elected to the US House of Representatives, winning the Washington State Senate seat. India-born Jayapal made a mark with her progressive agenda in the Washington State Senate.

5. Govt to open Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Kendra in every Parliamentary Constituency

  • The Centre has decided to open Pradhan Mantri Kaushal Vikas Kendra in every Parliamentary Constituency to impart skill training to the people and make them employable.
  • Minister of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship Rajiv Pratap Rudy said, through these centres, a standard will be created to enhance the skill level of trainees so that they could earn more money.

6. Every district in Punjab to have sports school: Badal

Punjab Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal has announced that sports schools will be opened in every district of the state to hone and prepare young talents for major sports events. Sports schools will be opened in all districts of the state. Presently, two sports schools are operational in Bathinda and Jalandhar.

7. Global Rajasthan Agritech meet(GRAM) begins in Jaipur

A three-day international event of ‘Global Rajasthan Agritech Meet (GRAM)’ for farmers will begin in Jaipur on November 9 which will showcase best global practices and technologies suitable for farmers. Rajasthan Governor Kalyan Singh will inaugurate the event, a platform for farmers, investors, manufacturers and the academicians and researchers.

8. Union Government launches Pradhan Mantri Yuva Yojana

The Ministry of Skill Development and Entrepreneurship has announced launch of Pradhan Mantri Yuva Yojana to scale up an ecosystem of entrepreneurship for youngsters. The scheme spans over five years (2016-17 to 2020-21) with a project cost of Rs 499.94 crore and will provide entrepreneurship education and training to over 7 lakh students in 5 years through 3,050 institutes.

9. Competition commission of India (CCI) selected to host ICN 2018 Annual conference

Competition Commission of India (CCI) selected to host ICN 2018 Annual Conference in New Delhi in March –April 2018. Recognising the growing stature of Competition Commission of India (CCI) in the world, International Competition Network (ICN) has accepted the proposal and decided that Competition Commission of India would host the 2018 ICN Annual Conference. This will be held at Delhi in March –April 2018.

10. India, Myanmar and Thailand Friendship Motor Car Rally, 2016

India, Myanmar and Thailand Friendship Motor Car Rally, 2016 to Be Flagged-off on 13th November, 2016 .To improve the connectivity by road in South East Asian region and to sensitize the stakeholders of India Myanmar and Thailand Motor Vehicle Agreement regarding potential benefits of such a regulatory regime, a Friendship Motor Car Rally from Delhi to Bangkok is being organized from 13th November to 3rd December, 2016.

11.  India’s first LNG-powered bus rolls out in Kerala

Scripting a new chapter in the country’s transport sector which moves towards clean fuel, India’s first liquefied natural gas-driven bus was launched. Union Petroleum and Natural Gas Minister Dharmendra Pradhan and Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan jointly flagged off the first pilot run of the eco-friendly bus on the sidelines of the fourth meeting of the Group of Ministers, set up by the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways.

12. DRDO Conducts the 4th Young Scientists Meet

The 4th Young Scientists Meet (YSM), organized by the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Allied Sciences (INMAS), New Delhi along with other Delhi based laboratories of the DRDO, commenced. DRDO provides a platform to its young scientists in the form of YSM to interact, network, discuss and share their scientific ideas that help them unleash their creative and innovative potential.

13. World’s largest nation-Building Digital Initiative “smart India Hackathon 2017” launched

Union HRD Minister Shri Prakash Javadekar has inaugurated the world’s largest digital national building initiative “Smart India Hackathon 2017” by handing over a torch to technology students. The students will be required to solve during the Hackathon that will take place in early 2017. The Hackathon will have nearly 500 problem statements in all which will be published on innovate.mygov.in.

14.  RBI issues Clarifications on Hedging for External Commercial Borrowings

The Reserve Bank of India (RBI) issued clarifications on hedging of currency for external commercial borrowings (ECBs) in a notification on its website. The ECB borrower will be required to cover both principal as well as coupon payments through the hedges done, starting from the day of borrowing. The hedging period will be for the entire life of the liability with a minimum one-year rollover option, ensuring that the total exposure is not unhedged at any point of time.

15. First Bank in India: City Union Bank’s pilot robot to be deployed first in Chennai

City Union Bank (CUB) plans to deploy robots in its branches, becoming the first bank in the country to do so. Japan’s Soft Bank was the first to use a robot in banking operations. CUB’s Managing Director & CEO N Kamakodi said that the ‘CUB-Lakshmi’ humanoid is a pilot project to be deployed in the bank’s T Nagar branch in Chennai.

16. November 10: World Science Day for Peace and Development 

The World Science Day for Peace and Development 2016 was observed on 10 November 2016 across the world. The theme for 2016 is Celebrating Science Centres and Science Museums. Each year, World Science Day for Peace and Development offers an opportunity to demonstrate why science is relevant to people’s daily lives and to engage them in debates on related issues.
