11. WEF commends India’s economic growth

According to the World Economic Forum (WEF) India, in the coming years, is positioned much more favorably than China in terms of growth. In an article published on its website, the Head of India and South Asia for World Economic Forum, Viraj Mehta, said that there is now a consensus among analysts that there are only a few bright spots in the global economy, and India is one of them.

The World Economic Forum also noted that growth accelerated this year to around 7.5 percent, putting the country on course to overtake China by the end of 2016.

12. Indian Railways wins 32nd Indian Oil Surjit Hockey Tournament

Indian Railways has emerged as champions for the first time in 32nd Indian Oil Servo Surjit Hockey Tournament. They have defeated the defending champions Indian Oil Corporation of Mumbai by 4-3 in the nail biting final at the Olympian Surjit Hockey Stadium. Star-studded Indian Oil Corporation finished runners-up for the sixth time. The winners were presented a cheque of Rs 5 lakh and the trophy. Runners-up get cash award of Rs 2.50 lakh and trophy. The Player of the Tournament Malak Singh of Indian Railways was given a cash award of Rs 25000.

13. WHO officially declares Sierra Leone Ebola-free

Sierra Leone has been declared free of Ebola by the World Health Organisation, prompting nationwide celebrations tinged with sadness over the 4,000 lives the virus claimed. Freetown was transformed into a giant carnival on Friday night as ecstatic crowds took to the streets of the capital in an outpouring of emotion. Relief that the 17-month outbreak was all but over was reflected in candlelit prayers and spontaneous parties.

Sierra Leone’s president, Ernest Bai Koroma, has ended the state of emergency declared during the outbreak, but the country will now enter a 90-day period of heightened surveillance to make sure the virus does not return.

14. Jaffer becomes first to score 10000 runs in Ranji

Vidarbha opener Wasim Jaffer became the first cricketer in Ranji Trophy history to notch up 10000 runs on day two of their Group A match against Bengal at the Jadavpur University second campus ground in Saltlake. Having made his debut for Mumbai in 1996-97, Jaffer needed eight runs to reach the milestone, which he got with an elegant drive to long off boundary against Bengal seamer Veer Pratap in the penultimate delivery of eighth over.

His Vidarbha teammates gave a standing ovation as he acknowledged the feat. This is for the first time a batsman scaled the peak since the tournament’s inception in 1934-35.

15. New smartphone app to help cardiac arrest victims

Japanese researchers have developed a new smartphone app that alerts rescuers with lifesaving automated external defibrillator (AEDs) when an out-of-hospital cardiac arrest occurs nearby. The earlier bystanders can deliver shocks with an automated external defibrillator (AED) to people who have cardiac arrest outside the hospital, the better their chances are for survival.

Although it may be difficult to find community-based AEDs, the new smartphone application helps connect rescuers with lifesaving AEDs and victims with sudden cardiac arrest.

16. Army win shooting championship

Winning 10 gold medals, the Army annexed the team title of the 25th All India G V Mavalankar Shooting Championship. Army shooters bagged 10 gold, eight silver and nine bronze medals in the nine-day championship. The National Cadet Corps (NCC) secured the runners up position bagging eight gold, 10 silver and six bronze medals, while Haryana finished third with six gold, seven silver and five bronze medals.

17. Pt Shiv Kumar Sharma gets Kala Shikhar award

Santoor maestro Pandit Shiv Kumar Sharma has been honoured with the Aditya Vikram Birla Kala Shikhar Award for lifetime achievement. Maharashtra Governor C Vidyasagar Rao presented the award to 77-year-old Sharma. He also presented the Kala Kiran Awards to Murad Ali Khan (Sarangi), Satyajit Talwalkar (Tabla) and Special Jury Award to Sanjeev and Ashwani Shankar (both Shehnai).

Noted personalities like Lata Mangeshkar, Pt Bhimsen Joshi, Pt Jasraj, Guru Kelucharan Mohapatra, Pt Ram Narayan, MF Hussain, Habib Tanvir, Gangubai Hangal and Dr Girija Devi are some of the past recipients of the award.

The Sangit Kala Kendra was founded by late industrialist Aditya Vikram Birla in 1973 to encourage and nurture the various visual and performing arts. The awards were instituted in 1996.
