As well as being a day to celebrate, India’s National Youth Day (January 12) is an opportunity to think deeply about the values and principles espoused by Swami Vivekananda, one of the country’s most revered spiritual leaders and philosophers.
On this day, we remember him and the immense impact he had on Indian culture and the globe.
An Account of Swami Vivekananda’s Life and Work
A prominent role in the Western dissemination of the Indian philosophies of Vedanta and Yoga, Swami Vivekananda was born in Kolkata on January 12, 1863.
His most famous speech was his introduction of Hinduism to Westerners at the 1893 Chicago Parliament of the World’s Religions, for which he is widely remembered.
His impact, however, goes well beyond the realm of spirituality; he was instrumental in Hinduism’s renaissance and helped foster a sense of national pride among Indian colonizers.
