To motivate the people of India to cast their ballots in the upcoming elections, January 25 is observed annually as National Voters’ Day. It is being commemorated this year as the fourteenth iteration.
Indian democracy is strong and National Voters’ Day is especially meaningful since each vote represents the hopes and dreams of the people. Votes in India, the biggest democracy in the world, are extremely important. The public’s awareness of and faith in the electorate are honored on this day.
National Voters’ Day: A Historical Context
In response to a rising need, the Election Commission of India (ECI) declared 2011 as National Voters’ Day.
The growing indifference of newly registered voters, especially those who had just reached the age of 18, towards adding their names to electoral records was brought to light by Ambika Soni, who was the minister of information and broadcasting at the time.
A plan to launch a campaign to resolve this issue was authorized by the government in response, with then-Prime Minister Manmohan Singh at the helm.
The date, January 25, was selected to correspond with the ECI’s foundation anniversary in 1950, representing a recommitment to democratic engagement.
What 2024’s National Voters’ Day Means
It would be a disservice not to recognize National Voters’ Day. Voting is a basic democratic right and obligation, and this day highlights that importance.
A robust democracy is characterized by a high voter turnout, which shows that the people are actively involved in selecting and monitoring their leaders. Honoring this day is crucial because it reminds people of the importance of voting and the responsibility that comes with it.
The theme for 2024’s National Voters’ Day
The ‘Nothing Like Voting, I Vote For Sure’ theme, which was dedicated to voters in 2018, will be continued in NVD 2024.
At the annual national event being hosted in New Delhi by the Election Commission of India, Union Minister of State for Law and Justice (Independent Charge), Arjun Ram Meghwal, will be the Guest of Honour, while President Droupadi Murmu will preside as Chief Guest.
Uzbekistan, Sri Lanka, Russia, the Maldives, and the Philippines are among the countries whose heads of election management agencies will be in attendance.
