National Parks and Wildlife Sanctuaries of Assam

In today’s era, It has become essential to conserve the wildlife. In the 1960s and 1970s, conservationist demanded a national wildlife protection programme. The Indian wildlife (protection) Act was implemented in 1972 with the aim to conserve and protecting habitat. Here, we have provided details about 10 wildlife sanctuaries.

National Parks of Assam:

Trick- Manas name is Kazual like dibru and Rajiv.

1990 950 km². Flora: Assam Valley Semi-Evergreen Alluvial Grasslands which cover almost 50% of the Park.

Fauna: The sanctuary has recorded 55  mammals, 380  birds, 50 of reptiles, and 3  amphibians. Out of these wildlife, 21 mammals like Indian elephants, Indian rhinoceros, gaurs, Asian water buffaloesetc…

Nameri National Park (Nameri) 1978  200 km² Flora: semi-evergreen, moist deciduous forests with cane and bamboo brakes.

Fauna:  tiger, leopard, sambar, dhole (the Asiatic wild dog), pygmy hog, muntjac, gaur, wild boar, sloth bear, Himalayan black bear, capped langur and Indian giant squirrel.

Dibru-Saikhowa National Park (Dibru)

1986- Wildlife Sanctuary

350 km² Fauna:  White-winged wood duck,  water buffalo, Black-breasted Parrotbill, the tiger and Capped Langur.
Rajiv Gandhi  Orang National Park (Rajiv) 

It is also known as the mini Kaziranga National Park (IUCN site).

 

1985-Wildlife Sanctuary

1999- National Park

78.81 square kilometres Flora: The park has rich vegetation of forests, natural forest, non-aquatic grass/plants. The forest species found are Bombax ceiba, Dalbergia sissoo.

Fauna:  royal Bengal tiger (Panthera tigris tigris), Asiatic elephant, pygmy hog, hog deer and wild boar, It is the only stronghold of rhinoceros on the north bank of the Brahmaputra river.


Wildlife Sanctuaries of Assam

Deepor Beel Wildlife Sanctuary(Deepa)

It is also called a wetland under the Ramsar Conventionwhich has listed the lake in November 2002, as a Ramsar Site

 1989 Flora: Aquatic vegetation like water hyacinth, aquatic grasses, water lilies.

Fauna: 20 amphibian, 12 lizards, 18 snakes and 6 turtle and tortoise.

Garam pani Wildlife Sanctuary (Garam pani)

It is one of the oldest sanctuaries containing hot water spring and waterfalls and surrounded by Nambor Sanctuary having 51 rare species of orchid.

6.05 km² Fauna: hoolock gibbons and golden langurs.  pied hornbill, hill myna, python, cobra, monitor lizards.
Bornadi Wildlife Sanctuary(Born) 1980 26.22-square-kilometre Fauna:  pygmy hog, golden langur, clouded leopard, hoolock gibbon and white-winged wood duck
Sonai Rupai Wildlife Sanctuary(Sona) 1998 175 sq. km Fauna:Mammals: tiger, lesser cats, elephant, qaur[,

Birds: white winged wood duck, hornbill

Reptiles: python, Russell’s viper, etc.

Hollongapar Wildlife Sanctuary(Holland)

formerly known as the Gibbon Wildlife Sanctuary

1997 20.99 km² Flora:  Dipterocarpus macrocarpus.

Fauna:  Bengal slow loris, stump-tailed macaque etc,..

East Karbi Anglong Wildlife Sanctuary (East) 2000 221.81 sq. kms

Mammals : Tiger, Elephant, Gaur, Sambar, Bears, Barking deer,

Birds : High diversity of woodland birds.
Reptiles & Amphibians : Python, Cobra, Monitor lizards, Hill tortoise etc.

Bherajan Borajan Padumoni Wildlife Sanctuary (rajan- Padumoni ) 7.22 km². Flora: Bherjan, Borajan and Padumoni forests.

Fauna:  Hoolock Gibbon, Capped Langur, Pig-tailed Macaque, Slow Loris and Rhesus Macaque, Leopardetc.
